Dr. Brown's baby bottles were my first choice when it came to bottles for my youngest They cost a little more than other brands, around $5 a piece but I was willing to pay the extra money for a bottle that looked like they worked well, made in the USA and BPA free.
My son never had colic so I'm can't tell you how it works with colicky babies. However I can tell you that my son rarely had gas and hardly ever spit up.Dr. Brown's works like no other bottle. The website says.
"Our Dr. Brown's bottle features a patented two-piece internal vent system that works unlike any other bottle design. The vent system fully vents our bottle for vacuum-free feeding, which we call positive-pressure flow, similar to breastfeeding. As the baby feeds, air is channeled from the nipple collar through the vent system, bypassing the breast milk or formula, to the back of the bottle. Air never mixes with the breast milk or formula which minimizes oxidation and helps maintain essential nutrients like vitamins C, A and E.
Babies feed more comfortably because the vent system allows them to nurse without fighting the negative effects of a vacuum or the discomfort of ingesting air bubbles. This helps to reduce feeding problems like colic, spit-up, burping, and gas. The breast milk or formula flows freely, without nipple collapse."
The bottles have a few extra pieces than most. There is a "vent" that looks like a tube and another piece (vent insert) that fits on top if it. You place it in the bottle, screw on the collar and nipple and voilà. The bottles also come with a guard to put under the nipple to prevent leaks and they come with a cap. Also included is a brush for cleaning the vent and vent insert.
Like I've said before the bottles are awesome but my biggest problem is cleaning. For each bottle you buy, you receive one small vent brush. They're about the size of pipe cleaners so you can easily lose them. Plenty of mine have fallen down the sink drain. Of course there are replacement brushes, for a 4 pack it's $4-$5. It's hard to clean in all the crevices on the parts. The vent inserts are probably the most frustrating. On top of that in order to prevent leaks while feeding you must not let the liquid enter the vent. This can be a little tricky if you have a wiggle worm or a baby that is starting to feed theirselves.
Even though the are a little more pricey, takes more cleaning, and it can leak I would use these bottles again. I definitely recommend tryiing out Dr. Brown's BPA Free Baby Bottles.
