There are a lot of hair care products out there, but not many without citric acid. For some, citric acid is very good for the hair, clearing clogged follicles so that hair remains thick and healthy. For others however, citric acid in the shampoo is very bad. I happen to be allergic to citric acid. I cannot have citrus fruit else I break out in hives and have intestinal problems. If you've noticed a similar pattern after eating citrus fruit, you might also be allergic. In which case, you'll want to avoid using any hygiene product that has citric acid in it as well. Having searched through many, many hair care products, I have to say that Dove is one of the very few that does not include it as an ingredient. Other shampoos (which contain citric acid) have made my hair fall out and given me an itchy, dry scalp. Dove does not.

Dove prides itself on its mildness and gentlenessas a hygiene product. From soaps and cleansers to shampoo and conditioners, Dove is one of the safest products for people with problem skin and hair. Though my hair is very long and curly, a little Dove shampoo stretches a long way, lathering nicely and cleansing as well as any other hair care product on the shelf.

What I particularly like about the cool moisture shampoo is the smell. It has a very clean, slightly sweet scent. I also work in a very dry environment, so any added moisture is a good thing. Of all my physical features, I am most proud of and protective of my hair, so when I find a good product like Dove Cool Moisture shampoo, you can bet that I'll go out of my way to find it in the stores. I can't use just anything on my hair.

I started using Dove products after I saw their "real women" ad campaign on Oprah. I was really happy with how well their shampoo, conditioner, and lotions work. So I used them for a long time.

But I had to stop using them when I found out their shampoos and conditioners contain two ingredients, Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate, Ammonium Laureth Sulfate , that cause my partner to have blisters and sores on her scalp and hands.

And I also discovered that their shampoo and conditioner contains ingredients like Ammonium Xylene-Sulfonate that act as estrogen. It has caused my periods to stop, and a lot of my hair to fall out.

I looked on some online forums and saw that we are not the only people with this problem with Dove shampoo and conditioners.

I realize that it probably wouldn't be that big of a deal if there weren't already so many xenoestrogens in our environment in the US. Since we've stopped using Dove products our symptoms have improved a lot.

If Dove were able to create a line of natural products without xenoestrogenic chemicals and sodium laurate related chemicals that I would certainly buy those. And I believe that it would show some genuine care and concern for the health of the women they market to.

Other chemicals that act as estrogens are parabens and phenoxyethanol.
