This is an excellent source-book for cosmetics and skin care shopping. Use as a go-to to determine if that pricey moisturizer or cleanser is really worth the money, and how to find inexpensive products that really work. Paula has a companion website, costmeticcop.com, that covers more products and she reviews more each month.

Save LOTS of money, check with Paula first! There are a lot of pricey products out there that are poorly rated because they contain damaging or inflaming ingredients, and a lot more that cannot scientifically support their claims and their product just does not work. For example,...

I first got hooked on these books when I was about 13 years old and my mom checked it out from the library.  I was just getting into makeup and skin care, and I had a job so my paychecks tended to go towards makeup.  Well I had been having a few breakouts, and the lady at the Clinique counter totally saw me coming and got me to purchase over $60 worth of products (and at 13 that's a whole lot of money).  Well I had been using the products for a couple of weeks and my skin was getting so much worse!  What had started as minor breakouts on my forehead turned into a raging acne fest that I couldn't... read full review »

"Don't Go To The Cosmetics Counter Without Me" is officially thicker than the phone book, although smaller in length and width. Parts of the book were redundant, which surprised me since it was already such a long book, but I got past that flaw. Begoun and her crew did extensive research on tons of products from every makeup line to see if the products were good for skin (most are not even when they claim to be), if they did what they claim (most don't), if they are useable cosmetics, and value for the money.
