Don't Forget the Lyrics —

Last night, after my kids and I finished watching the American Idol results, Fox immediately started showing Don't Forget the Lyrics. I've never had much desire in watching this show before, and wanted to switch the channel right then. My son told me he'd seen the show before and thought it was really good, asking me to leave it on. I relented and promised him one song. I was just going to watch the contestant get the lyrics to one song, and then I was turning it off. An hour later I turned it off and had all sorts of songs, good and bad, stuck in my head.

So how did I get stuck watching the whole show after I promised just one song? I actually liked it. My kids and I were having so much fun watching together. We watched one song, and as I knew all the words without even looking at the screen, my son was telling me I should be on the show. Perhaps I was becoming his lyrical hero? Wishful parental thinking to be any type of hero to a 14 year old.

I kept saying one more song, one more song, one more song, and before long the show was halfway through, and I knew I was in it for the long haul. The contestant, slightly irritating, as she was a singer and dancer, and was obviously there showing off her wares, would be presented with several song genres, such as 70s, Pop, R&B, etc. After choosing a genre, she'd have a choice of two songs and would be told how many words she would need to remember, starting with 4 and ending up with 10 words needed by the time she got to the $500,000 level.

I had a lot of fun singing these old songs, everything from Mustang Sally, True Colors, and My Girl. Besides, you can't beat the entrainment value Wayne Brandy provides, whether he's on Whose Line Is It Anyway, hosting his own talk show, or appearing as a game show host. His hosting duties on Celebrity Duets was probably the best part of the show. He's always good for plenty of humor, and we know from Whose Line that he has a lot of singing talent of his own.

The contestant danced and sang her way to the final round, knowing the correct words to the first nine songs, only needing help a few times. By the time she got to the last song, she didn't know the lyrics, but sang that she "just won $350,000," making it through the first nine songs.  I had to admit at that point that I had been thoroughly entertained during the hour, and you just can't beat having family time like that, as my kids and I were all singing the songs together.

Now, if I could only do something with the fact that after finishing Don't Forget the Lyrics, I woke up this morning with the words to Ratt's Round and Round going through my head.
