Don Piper et al - 90 Minutes In Heaven: A True Story of Death & Life Books —

I was first introducted to 90 Minutes in Heaven by someone from our church. I think he found some helpful information in this book after his young son died in a tragic hunting accident. Then someone from my yoga class brought 90 Minutes in Heaven to class one night and asked if I would like to read it. How could I say no?

Don Piper had no pulse and was pronounced dead at the scene of an automobile accident. He was still within his mangled vehicle and covered with a tarp when Dick Onerecker and his wife drove up to the scene. Although it seemed a bit odd, Dick Onerecker reported that God told him to go over and pray for the dead man in the red car as the crew who were called to the scene awaited the Jaws of Life so that Don Piper could be extracted from the mangled mass of his vehicle and transported to the mortuary.

Climbing under the tarp and into the back seat, Dick Onerecker placed his hand on Don Piper's lifeless shoulder and began to pray fervently after verifying for himself that there was no pulse. Upon finishing that heartfelt prayer, Mr. Onerecker began to sing "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." Miraculously, the dead man began to sing with him.

Don Piper's account of his experience in heaven must be something akin to someone trying to describe Disney World to a remote, primitive village in the jungles of Africa. How do you describe something that is so far beyond a person's imagination? Those vivid memories must be so intimate and wonderful, and I think this book is a testimony to a man who could have kept this to himself but decided to share his experience in heaven to help others.

I could not help but think about Lazarus as Don Piper continued the story beyond that miraculous trip. How difficult it must be to come back! One doctor had mentioned to him that he had seen worse, but none of those other patients had survived. The pictures of the wrecked vehicle and the Ilizarov device that helped to save his leg provide even more evidence of the seriousness of Mr. Piper's injuries.

I thought it was significant that Mr. Piper did not mention anything about pain until after he returned from that heavenly trip. He only spoke of peace and happiness immediately after dying. The pain only emerged after his return to earth. That helped me a great deal in thinking of my dad's fatal automobile accident.

Mr. Piper could have finished 90 Minutes in Heaven at his return to earth, but he decided to share even more of himself by honestly describing his difficulty with the pain, treatment, depression, and a wish to die again. I think many people can relate to someone who is painfully human yet still seeks to help people despite his own limitations.

The author spoke candidly of learning to re-think life and how to respond to others, such as learning to see how allowing others to help him enabled them to be blessed as well. I tend to have a hard time allowing others to help me, and his examples gave me a different viewpoint on accepting help when needed. Mr. Piper also spoke of how his experience in living with pain helped him to see eye-to-eye with people for whom he would have only been able to imagine a glimpse of their pain before.

Each chapter begins with a Bible verse, which I think is a nice touch.

My Viewpoint:

90 Minutes in Heaven takes an honest look at one man's first-hand experience in heaven and how to cope with difficulties in this world after death. As a nurse, I have had the privilege of being with many people as they have departed this world. The atmosphere in the hospital room often changes in those last moments, and I have seen more than one dying person look beyond what we can see. Some have smiled with their last breath. Perhaps they saw what Don Piper saw during his 90 Minutes in Heaven.

John, you obviously feel very strongly about this book and review and I appreciate that you'd take the time to post your thoughts. My dad was killed in an automobile accident and I hope that he saw heaven.

In response to Katrena's comment from Aug 31, 2009 at 1:58AM:

The question is NOT that Mr. Piper experienced a horrible accident and had a courageous and extensive recovery. The issue is the 15 pages dedicated to his viewing what he called heaven. The 66 books of the Bible comprise the Holy Scripture and is the only major religious writing that commands its readers to "test all things and hold fast to that which is true" and the instruction carries with it that the Bible is to be the yardstick of that test.

Mr. Piper's heresy is in his description of a non-Biblical description. Failing that test, I find it of interest that the Lord Jesus, in his telling the story of Lazarus and the rich man explains that once dead in the physical sense, there is no going back. Paul states with strong emphasis that to be "absent from the body is to be present with THE LORD!" and Paul goes further to state that "It is appointed unto man to die, but once, and then the judgment!" All of these statements contradict Mr. Piper and show that his feel good experience was NOT IN HEAVEN as described in the Bible.

Then there is the issue of how Mr. Piper obtains his sales - from the Christian community - he does not speak to the lost, his efforts are to church members. The fact that he misleads them to believe that they will experience family is in contradiction to the Lord Jesus own words that there is no marriage in heaven.

You may elect to discard the Bible and believe Mr. Piper, but it will be a choice that has no reason other than emotion. The fact that Mr. Piper is shows to be a false teacher negates the remainder of his testimony as it is Mr. Piper who titles the book and places his credibility on that issue. Physical science can easily explain the event in terms that make more sense than super-natural. I have always had this thought, "Can TRUTH came from a lie?" The obvious is that no, the lie taints anything that may have been true. Old testament says that anyone speaking for God must be 100% complete- not 99%.

Thanks for your comments. I hope you'll write a review of this book as well if you've read it. I believe the song that Mr. Piper began singing when a preacher began praying for him long after he was pronounced dead was "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." If God can find a way for people to hear words in their own language when they are actually spoken in another language, I suppose that He could also open a person's eyes to see something in a way that he could understand from an earthly reference. I can't say exactly what Mr. Piper's private motivations and thoughts are, but I did find the book to be interesting and appreciated his willingness to share his personal experience.

Hebrews tells us that man is appointed to die BUT Once and then the judgement. Paul tells us that to "be absent from the body is to be present with the LORD!" and the Lord Jesus tells the story of Lazerus and the rich man. Although the Lord Jesus resurrected another Lazerus and Peter was permitted to raise a young girl, each was done to stress the Lordship of Jesus. Don Piper does not mention Jesus, describes a completely different Heaven than the one in Revelation Chapter 21 and 22 and that is enough for me to say that this book is heresy and a direct attack against the Bible wanting to make people believe that there is no JUDGE or JUDGMENT. These peple Piper met were NOT in the resurrected bodies but "exactly as he remembered them!" Eisigesis is FORBIDDEN, but Piper says there is a welcoming committee to greet you and Paul says otherwise. I choose the Bible orver Piper and I choose Paul and John over Piper. My prayer is that Piper will surrender to the Lord Jesus. He mentions God many times, but look in James 2, and he makes it clear that even the demons do that! It is the NAME OF JESUS that every knee shall bow!

I have read this book too and gave it to my Daddy for Christmas in '07! I read it after my best friend's daughter died of a seizure when she was 15. Did you know that he has now released a second book and takes you further into his healing and recovery and his ministry? This really is a great book! ~Gigi
