I receive the Domestications catalog through the mail, and I enjoy sipping a cup of tea while I leaf through the colorful pages; even when I'm not in the market for anything domestic. That tells you how much I enjoy keeping up with the latest home fashion trends.
Recently, however, I was in the market for a queen size bedding set. My first source turned up nothing (at least nothing in stock). So, I made the web journey to domestications.com to see what I could find. It turns out, I found more than I initially budgeted for.
Domestications is a home décor retailer that offers the standard variety of bedding ensembles, sheets, curtains, and such at reasonable prices. You are not likely to find anything high-style, but then again, you won't suffer with a high price tag either. It's not the least expensive or trendiest retailer, nor does it have the largest inventory or broadest range of styles and colors. Still, I find it to be a pleasant shopping experience where I've been known to pick up a nice item or two.
My decorating dilemma wasn't earth-shattering; I just needed a couple of sheet sets for the master bedroom and a comforter set for a second bedroom. Unfortunately, I'd been unable to find exactly what I wanted at other merchants. At domestications.com, I found a comforter set that my family liked, and lo-and-behold, it was actually IN STOCK (not something you can always count on in cyberspace). There was also a special on yummy 400-count Egyptian cotton sheet sets for $49.95 for any size. I added two colors to my list and proceeded to check out. I took advantage of the Domestications installment plan that charges the amount of the order to your major credit card in three installments with no added interest. I like having that option because it helps the household cash flow, and as a budget shopper, I'm all for that.
The linens were in stock, were shipped within 3 days, and delivered shortly thereafter. The 400-count sheet sets have a wonderful drape and body to them, so I'm very happy with those. The Bed-in-a-Bag set - not so much.
The comforter and bed skirt are bright, youthful, contemporary, and selected by the 13-year old herself. That's not the problem. The problem is the low quality of the sheet set that comes with the Bed-in-a-Bag. At 180-thread count, I knew they weren't going to be luxurious, but I was expecting something more than scratchy, see-through cotton. I know, I know...you get what you pay for (in this case $59.99/set). However, since I didn't pay for the sheets separately, I didn't worry about it too much. I made the bed up with a coordinating soft jersey sheet set instead, and just put the cheapo sheets in the back of the closet. Problem solved.
All in all, it was a hit-or-miss experience. I was disappointed in the quality of the comforter set, but I do enjoy the colorful and comfortable sheet sets that I picked up. Ultimately, my decorating dilemma was solved. Your mileage may vary.
Domestications.com is pretty good at doing what it does best: sell everyday linens at stock-up prices.
