When I think of Dole, I think of pineapples. Really, does anyone else grow and sell pineapples? If they do, then I've not seen them.

I used to hedge on buying whole pineapples, because they are big and spiny. The shells really aren't are wicked as they look, so I'd buy a pineapple from time to time.

After I started using my electric knife to prepare my pineapple, I started buying them more often. An electric knife will cut right through. I run the knife up one side and then up the other. That leaves two skinnier sides that I do the same way. Then I slice the pineapple like cantelope and peel it unless we plan to grill it. I highly recommend grilling pineapple. Yum. It turns out great.

When we cut up a Dole pineapple, we stick the top in a big pot with soil. The top grows a new pineapple. The home grown ones are smaller than the Dole pineapples. Kids really enjoy watching a pineapple form on top of the stem that grows out of the pineappe top.

I have a pineapple on my cabinet right now. We're having shrimp tomorrow, and fresh pineapple really goes great with seafood.

If you need directions to grill pineapple, then see my tips at:

The ones you grow from the tops come out about the size of softballs. They taste OK. But they take several years and are really small.

Can you eat the pineapples you grow? Just think, you only need to buy one then you can keep growing new ones from the one you grew and you'll have pineapple for life! We love grilled pineapple too. Your pics look yummy.

Hi Matt,

I don't chill pineapple until after I've cut it up. We eat what we can and then chill the leftovers. I also like it best at room temp.

I write for Garden & Hearth and cover grilling. If anyone needs directions for grilling pineapple, here is my article:

I took the photo with the article too, so that's how the pineapple looks cut with the electric knife.

Thanks for the serving tip. Super idea. I'll have to try that.

Excellent! I just cut one up this morning. Do you think that it is better not to chill? It seems to taste better at room temp.

Grilling is a great idea. I like to cut off the top and quarter it, trim off the core from each section and then cut it off the skin and slice it leaving it in a pineapple boat. Looks great when served.
