Pros

    Helping a dog that has no where to go, seeing the look in their eyes, The love you can share with them, Volunteering there is very rewarding, Saving a dog's life is the greatest

Cons
    a lot of not dog friendly places

I belong to Gulf South Goldens, a golden retriever rescue in southern Louisiana.
I have 3 goldens, 2 being rescued.
There is almost nothing I can think of to describe the joy and meaning it has given to my life. My 2 rescues are great dogs that have fit right in. I believe they know they are rescued and are grateful beyong measure.
If anyone needs a dog rescue is the way to go. Every single breed has one. Look on petfinder.com.
