Nine months ago I joined Indiana Petite Paws Rescue Angels, Inc. It is a Yorkie rescue but we also rescue other breeds under 15 pounds. This is the best thing I have ever done in my life. I have fostered numerous dogs. Most are purebred and the most loving adorable dogs anyone could meet. Because of this group, I have found purpose in my life. I love animals of all sorts.

We rescue these dogs from shelters, owner surrenders, and puppy mills. When I first joined the group I had no idea what a puppy mill was. Now that I know I wish I didn't. Animals are kept in small wire cages. Sometimes too small of cages that cause them harm. They are kept outside in blistering heat and freezing cold. They are fed poorly and not watered as they should be. They are never handled. They are not taken out to go to the bathroom. The cages are stacked one on top of the other. I wouldn't want to be the poor puppy on the bottom. They aren't allowed out of their cage for anything. They aren't vetted properly. Some of the poor puppies we get are so matted with fescies that they have to be shaved to the skin. Sometimes they are so matted they can't even go to the bathroom. They have missing eyes or legs.

We feed our fosters only the best foods and recommend them highly to our adopters. With all the contamination in the pet food one has to be extremely careful. We feed our fosters only Life's Abundance or Burns.

I myself adopted the most beautiful Royal Imperial Shih Tzu. He was a puppy mill dog. He is five years old and is the most important thing in my life besides my family and friends. I really do not know what I would do without him. He now loves to be held and to go outside and play in the grass.

I and my husband live on a fixed income. If I didn't want to live in a house, eat, and drive a car I would spend every penny I earn on the rescue dogs. Every where I go I talk about the group, my dogs, and my fosters. I am always trying to convince people to join our group and help us out. The more fosters we can take in the more dogs we can save. I craft things for the dogs for us to sell to help with our vet bills. We take our fosters to the vet within 48 hours of taking them in and have a heartworm test and fecal test done for parasites. We then put them on heartworm and flea preventitive. Then they get their shots. Rabies and distemper. All of our pups are up to date on shots before they get adopted. We also spay or neuter our dogs. The last thing this country needs is more unwanted dogs. We also microchip our pupsters. We have them checked out and any necessary vetting done. This all costs a small fortune. We have saved over 100 dogs by June of this year. Most of our dogs just get the shots, parasite tests, and spay/neuter. Those alone are expensive and when you add major problems that require $2000 to $4000 in surgery we can be in trouble. Not to mention food. These are only a few of the things we spend money on but it is enough to put us in the whole if we don't get help from the public.

If you love animals and you have room for one little puppy or two the best thing you can do is join a rescue group.

God Bless you and all the other volunteers in this country. I have two rescue cats and they're great pets. I can't volunteer, but I always give what I can to the local Animal Rescue and one other NON KILL shelter. I get on my soap box whenever I can to SPAY AND NEUTER all your pets. Keep up the good work.

I too, have adopted a pet. She is a mini pin. She has not only become my life but also my husbands. Earlier this year my dog of 2 years died and I wanted another dog. We got two other dogs before getting this one. When we got her we almost took her back because she was kind of mean. But, we gave her a chance and now I don't know what I would do without her. She sleeps with us. The only way she falls asleep is if she is under the covers between my husband and me. We may be adopting another mini pin. A male this time.

Granny Pierson's review brought joy to my heart!

Rescue is one of the most fulfilling things a person can do, and as Granny writes can bring purpose to one's life. Without people like Granny, these lovely dogs would suffer and die, and no one would ever get to know their unique personalities. They have so much love to give!

Granny writes of the horrible puppy mills. Many people don't know that all the dogs sold in pet stores, from websites, and in most of the classifieds and flea markets are from these terrible places. When people stop buying these puppies, the mills will CLOSE and the abuse will stop.

There is a rescue for every breed of dog, as well as loving mutts. Simply search at a site like Petfinder.com to find the rescue dog that is waiting to grab your heart!

And if you have a spare moment, consider joining a group to help with foster care, fundraising, transport, or other needs.

You will find yourself very rich- rich in the peace and fulfillment of helping the needy.

Their love is a reward that is priceless.

Hi - Good for you! I, too, foster animals for our VERY small rescue here in the Jemez Mountains of NM ... if you need homes for some dogs, we can maybe work together ... my best friend LOVES Yorkies and would give them a GREAT home ... she cooks their food, they're NEVER outside alone ... email me at nmplantlady@wildblue.net ... and personally, I'd love another member of my family of "kids" to be a "go-with car dawgie!" I've had Shitzu's before and love them!

I get so upset over people who have no regard for a animals life, whether it be a dog, cat, bird, or any other animal who is part of this earth. Since I was knee high to a grasshopper we have had a dog, mostly chihuahuas, but they were always a FAMILY MEMBER, not just a dog. I don't understand how people can be so heartless. A animal needs the same things we do food, water, shelter, love, and medical check ups. It just makes me sad when I see or hear that people mistreat or abandon there animals. If you dont have any respect for animals DONT have one!!

You are a sweetheart. I have Koda a mixed/wolf we rescued, a man we hardly knew sold her to us casuse he already had 3 dogs and 2 kids to pay for. When he got herhe told us.the other owner was going to toss her in a pen with pitbulls to teach them to fight. I tried to get the address because I surely would have turned that jerk in. The Vet told us she was not being fed properlly. Shes better now but we don't think she will get much bigger from being deprived of food for God knows how long. She is about a year now and very much my baby. She has gained weight and gets spoiled by us tottally. I have a momma cat, didn't know she was fixen to be mama when I let her in (she was a stray) We kept 2 of the 4 kittens and found a wonderful home for the other 2 together. Of the 4 animals we have in the house my husbands parrot is the only one that was a "planned Purchase" Oh and btw my Koda has adopted a calico kitten thats hold up under the trailer next to ours and of course we are feeding her too. I wish we could care for more. Both my females are spayed. *S*

You all will get a higher place in Heaven because animals are Gods creations. Dog spelled back wards is God.
I am just starting to get involved in animal sanctuary. I am thinking about paying each month for a family to adopt a animal if they can take care of vet care and food. Will leave that part up to sanctuary to determine or pay for a pets buddy, partner in the sanctuary that are dependent on each other but family can't afford two adoption fees at that same time.
My head is spinning with ideas. We are retired and full time RVers that have one pet already I took for a man that just died with leukemia so can't handle anymore in RV. Also I pay for my Bichon (Annie) that I let my daughter have because Annie didn't want to be separated from Abby a rescue bichon from a puppy mill.

I also want to get connected with a group that wants to stop Veterinarians from taking voice boxes out of animals, that's what breeders do in these puppy mills in homes. Abby is one. We spent thousands on her to save her, now she has the permanent hole in her throat in order to breath. She almost died three times but we brought her back, with mouth to mouth until the vet did the surgery, we spent nights in the animal ER sleeping on a pallet with her.
But these mean people will spend there time in hell, HELL won't be large enough to hold them all.
I am angry that this world has become so mean, why good people die off and cruel ones live on.
We good ones have to get others involved to help in this battle.
Thanks to all of you.

Right! I am involved with golden retriever rescue down in Louisiana. I live with 3 goldens: 2 of which are rescues, and love them all to pieces!!!

I do dog rescue too! I'm part of Japanese Chin Rescue and Care, a nationwide group. It's really the best thing I've ever done with my time and 'materials'. I've learned to buy vaccines at farm supply stores and give them myself - this saves about $10/shot. We also feed the best foods we can, although this recent Chinese mess has us re-evaluating some of our old favorites. I personally like the frozen raw diets like Prairie - they make such a difference to coat and skin! Maybe you and I need to get together and compare notes?

Helping an animal rescue is what I'm doing here now. I've been involve in rescue for about 40 years but since retiring, I am really getting involve more. The internet has opened so many more options but also you finding out about more misery than you used to be able to get. You used to be limited to your own little area and really thought things were getting better but it isn't as good as what I thought it was and there is a lot of work to be done. Close down the puppy mills and the BYBs.

Animal rescue groups are the best thing ever! Way to get involved! I have three animals currently in my house. My cat I got from a litter from someone and she's my baby, the other big sweet cat was rescued after he was dumped on a farm, and my pit bill (Staffordshire Terrier) dog I adopted from the humane society. Just the best bunch of animals and I love them all

God Bless You, your Group and especially the animals. I foster newborn motherless kittens. Have bottle fed, hand raised and found homes for so many. Right now I don't have the space to care for puppies or dogs, but I always help when I can, and volunteer at a rescue near me. My favorite rescue dog knocked me down and I broke my toes, but I still love her! She was placed in a wonderful home. Animals are so loving. Keep up the good work.

This is great...keep spreading the word. I also love rescue work. I started by transporting and graduated to fostering puppy mill papillons. It is horrid where they come from but so rewarding to see them rehabilitated and finally fly. For those who can't foster try hlping with home visits or reference checks or there's always room to help at your local shelter.

Way to go! I belong to a rescue group for Basenji's and I am heavily involved in transporting the animals from pillar to post. I have two rescue dogs and now that our yard is fenced, can start fostering. I think being involved in rescue is so rewarding and it is such a big step in opening people's eyes to where lots of pet store puppies come from. Adopting an animal in need is a great way to add a pet to many families. I could go on..and on..but I'll step down, now. :-)

I, too, have rescue dogs. We have two Airedale mixes from the Airedale rescue. Their mother was a rescue along with 7 puppies, and we took two of them. I don't think I would ever get a dog again that wasn't a rescue of some type.

Kudos to you. I completely understand how expensive it can be. I've been rescuing dogs here and there when I can, and it's expensive, but worth it! I wish I could do more, but until I have more money I can't. Until then...the occasional rescue will have to be enough, I guess...

Good luck and keep up the good work! :)

My dogs are rescues and wouldn't know what I would do without them. I too wish I could save the animal world but unfortunately money makes the world go round. Great job and kudos!

Good Job--I know it is a hard one. I run a small rescue in WV and try to save as many puppies as possible for kill shelters. I wish more people would spay and neuter so there would not be so many unwanted puppies and dogs. Best of luck!
