I always knew that when I would have the oppurtunity to get a dog, I would be heading to my local animal shelter to do so.  I started looking for my best friend right after the spring semester finished up.  I began at one shelter, running into an issue with the system.  I had the perfect little pup picked out.  She was a beautiful white and brown australian shepherd named Toffee, and I wanted her.  So I filled out an application, and crossed my fingers.  A few days went by without any call.  Seeing as they were supposed to call after just 48 hours I decided to inquire.  I called the shelter and found out that, even though i was number one on the list to bring Toffee home, they gave her to someone else.  I only hope that she went to a good home.

A few weeks later I decided to try another shelter in a different town.  It was there that I found my beautiful black lab mix puppy Bella.  I picked her out of a narrowed down choice of 3.  It was difficult but definitly meant to be.  They brought her into the viewing room, set her on the floor with me, and she walked straight into my lap and curled up.  It was love at first sight!!!

After she spent an evening at the vet getting spayed, I went and picked her up.  The total was around $125 for her adoption, after her adoption fee, spay, hernia removal, and kennel cough medication.  The shelter gave us a voucher for part of the spay, and the wonderful vet did not charge for the hernia removal.  It ended up costing a little bit more then i had expected, but it was the best money I have ever spent.

Now I have a beautiful 8 month old baby girl, who loves me unconditionally, and likes to tear up the trash.  But hey, you can't have all sweet...sometimes you have to take some low!  I will always get my dogs from shelters, I can't help but take one home after looking into those beautiful eyes.
