I am a bichon frise rescue mom. I always wanted one of these dogs because they are basically hypoallergenic, but could not afford them. I decided to become a rescue mom and it was probably the most rewarding thing I have done in my lifetime. I adopted two of my fosters and couldn't be happier.
I have a 4 year old male that was turned in by it's owner because he marked in the house. What most owners don't know is that when a bichon male is not neutered, he will mark to let the female know where he is. However, once you neuter the dog, after about 4 months, the testosterone leaves their body and they are fine!
The other thing most owners don't know about is belly bands. These are bands you can buy at pet stores which wrap about the dog's middle and catches the "marking" - you merely put some sanitary napkins in there and walla, no more marked furniture or carpets!
My other little dog is a female about 2 years old who came from a puppy mill. She is missing her hind foot and it's the saddest thing you would ever want to see. Puppy mills are horrible places and they treat dogs horrendous. We don't know why her foot is missing - did another dog eat it off, was it injured, did they hurt her and so many other possibilities. I couldn't imagine her going thru the bonding of another family so I kept her. She loves my 4 yr old and they get along just wonderfully.
I would definitely recommend rescue work to anyone who is looking for something loving to do with their free time and anyone looking for a dog. It is the best way to "try" the dog out and see if it fits into your family rather than buy a dog and then it doesn't work and then what?
Rescue work rocks!
