Dog German Shepherd Mix —

I own a 9 1/2 year old German Shepherd mix. We believe his father was a black lab with chow mix. His mother was a full-blooded German Shepherd.

Fred is a great dog. He weighs 110 lbs. so you can't ever pick him up and his meds cost a fortune, but he's worth every time. I watch a lot of Court TV and I feel much more secure having Fred in the house with me!

He's settled down a lot over the years. He used to be much more high strung and jumped on people, etc. Now he just barks a lot. He's definitely the alpha dog of our family. And the neighborhood (in his mind). Just as most German Shepherds are great for security, so is Fred. You can tell he feels that it's his duty to protect the family and especially his doman, i.e., the house.

One unfortunate things is that the mortality of big dogs like German Shepherds is usually 10 years, so that's really his only drawback. That's why he's on plenty of meds for his ailments, and I take him to the vet to ensure all his vacccines, etc., are up-to-date. He'll be 10 years old in February.

But, thank goodness, he's pretty healthy!

We have a puppy we named bear, his mother was a purebred german shepherd, and his dad was a purebred black lab. He is a great dog, he plays well with our beagle and our 4 year old daughter. He is very protective of the family, especially with our daughter, and our beagle Sammy. Right now Bear is only 6 months old and about 35 pounds. He is in great health, and from the size of his paws I think he will get quite a bit bigger. I recommend this mix breed of dog to anyone with children who wants a protective family dog. He doesn't bark excessively and he is playful, but not hyperactive.
