I have three small dogs, a Shi Tzu, a Pom and a Jack Russell. Although I love them all; my Pom Harley is my favorite. She's a beautiful sable and cream and weighs about 8 pounds.

She has the heart of a lion and thinks she's a giant. She will not back down when playing with my bigger dogs and will try to pull the Jack around by the tug of war rope. My Asta will let her do it for awhile and then will whip Harley around, leading to a lot of mean sounding yet tiny growls from the flying fur ball. She incredibly intelligent and very loving. I really think she's the smartest dog I've ever known and she can communicate with her eyes and her prancing behavior in ways that have to be seen to be understood. Some Poms are yappy but I think that's poor training. We knew we couldn't tolerate a lot of yappy noise so as a tiny puppy we taught her the Quiet command and now she'll bark to alert to visitors and she also has a game of chase the Jack Russell that involves a lot of noise but that's outside so it's okay. Grooming is a once a week intensive session that requires a deep brushing to remove tiny mats in her dense undercoat. Baths are infrequent as she has very little doggy odor, even when wet from the rain. They dry really fast since their coats are meant to withstand snow and cold- the breed is a bred down sled dog- and the fur doesn't really absorb water.

Not the best dog for a constantly hot climate because they overheat easily. In the summer we keep a tiny wading pool for her and will put her in to cool off on hot days. They definitely have to be protected from heat stroke. She also suffered a broken leg as a small puppy. Her leg bones seem to be thinner than some other Poms I know, so we try and stop her from doing too much jumping down from sofas and such. Overall I find her to be the perfect loving companion and I think I'll be a Pom Mom for life.
