When my husband and I first got married, it was several years before we owned our own home and could get a dog. Meantime, we went to every dog show around. Studied them.

Our first dog was a Doberman. Speckie. (shortened from his AKC name).  We got him from a reputable breeder and I trained him. He was MY dog.

A couple years later, I got pregnant. Evidently that was a bad thing to Speck. Before anyone could even tell I was pregnant, Speck came over, laid in my lap, looked up at me and growled.  Needless to say, I was scared. Evidently, males are super possessive - even to the point of a baby. After our son was born, Speck loved him. But he was still mad at me. We took him back to the breeder, and thankfully she gave him a good home. This was very heartbreaking to us. He was a love. Just too smart - and too possessive. I just want to caution people getting a Doberman, to beware.

We've had two dobermans. They are a a very smart dog. To be a good family dog, they need to be well trained and well socialized with other dogs and people. If you have or are going to have children they need to socialzed with children also. If they are well socialized they will be a great pet. They are very loyal. When are grandson was born our first Doberman had never been around children. I was a little worried the first time he came over. But she was so protective of him! It's like she sensed he was helpless. When he would cry, she would whine and go between him and an adult until someone came and picked him up. When he started using a walker, she would walk right next to him. He could do anything to her and she didn't care. After she passed we got another Doberman, our grandson was was about 2 1/2. She was a little rough with him at first because she was a puppy but now they are the best of friends. He is 5 now. Hope this helps.
