Many people ignorantly believe that Dobermans are vicious and untrustworthy. I feel that this is mainly because this breed has been villainized on television and in movies for decades. One must realize that most of what we see on television and in theaters is FICTION!
I have spent many years working several different jobs inside the pet industry. I have known many a Doberman in my life. The vast majority of these dogs have been sweet, loving, devoted lap dogs. In fact, of the many Dobies I have known only one was ever vicious and untrustworthy. However upon meeting this dogs owners it was obvious who was to blame. The owners were rather unpleasant, violent people, and evidence suggested the dog was beaten or otherwise abused.
Many people wrongly mistake Dobie excitement as viciousness. Doberman are rather excitable and active dogs. A Dobie owner needs to be prepared to exercise his or her dog daily. Proper training and daily walks can go a long way to curb unwanted behavior due to excitement and hyperactivity. Doberman are also needy of large amounts of attention. This breed is in no way a kennel or doghouse dog; he is a member of the family. If you cannot or are unwilling to give a Dobie the attention and care that it needs then this breed is not for you.
I am the proud owner of a beautiful Dobie boy named Adam. Adam was a rescue dog with physical problems. I adopted him just before his first birthday, and he is now almost 5 years old. Adam has always been a loving and loyal companion. He is incredibly sweet and friendly. He plays daily with the young neighbor children, who often accidentally annoy or hurt him, yet he never complains. He wants nothing more than to be by my side and is most content curled up on the couch with me watching movies. He lets the cat take food directly out of his mouth, and even lets complete strangers take rawhides and other bones right out of his mouth. He is goofy and silly, which tends to mask his often amazing intelligence. This description perfectly fits almost any Dobe you will ever find.
Doberman were bred more than a hundred years ago to be personal guard dogs. Will your Dobie protect you if he feels you are being threatened in any way? Absolutely. Will a Doberman attack someone who has physically attacked you? Most likely. Your Dobie will be your savior if it is necessary. The rest of the time he is happiest being the big baby laying in your lap.
My Doberman, who is really overly friendly at most times, has protected me on several occasions. There have been a few times when a 'creepy' man has gotten what Adam considered to be too close to me. He has protected me but has never been vicious. He will body slam the man away from me, then wrap himself around my legs to guard and protect me. If the unwanted man steps towards me again he will continually repeat this behavior. Other times, when he feels I may be in danger he will hop on my lap and fully cover me with his own body to protect me. He will flat out sprawl across me and not let me up until what he feels is dangerous to me has passed (In these instances, an aggressive ex-boyfriend and loud construction noises). He has never bitten anyone. My dobie is so loving and friendly that I am confident in the fact that if Adam does not like someone, then there is something seriously wrong with that person and I don't want him or her around me. Would he attack if someone physically attacked me? Maybe. Probably. I hope so!
Given the proper care, the vast majority of these beautiful dogs are loving family companions that want nothing more than to receive and return all of your love and affection. Any abused dog may have aggression issues; this is true of any breed. In general, a Doberman wants nothing more than to be your best friend and constant, adoring, gleeful companion. These amazing animals have been wrongly and foolishly condemmed for far too long.
