I have 2 miniature dachshunds. The male now lives outside because he is and always has been very tempermental and he does not like children. I have an 18 month old. The female is the exact opposite. She loves my daughter. She's very protective of me and my daughter. The only time she has ever tried to bite was when she thought I was being harmed. She lets my daughter pull her ears and "pet" her really hard. She never gets mad. And she's the perfect lap dog. All she wants is a lap to sit in. And she's so smart. She has such a personality and I know she understands what I say. I can't say that about all dogs, just her. She tells me when she needs to go out, is out of food or water, or ready to go to bed. And she pretty much house broke herself. I have no patience for house training dogs. After about a week of cleaning up messes, outside they go. She has had a few accidents, but she knows she's not supposed to. She usually does it when she's mad at me. And when I see it all I have to do is give her a look and she tucks her tail in shame. But she has always just known to go to the door when she needs to go out. I got her at 8 weeks old and she lived in a kennel so she hadn't been worked with before. The male dachshund is also good about going to the door when he's inside. I would reccomend this breed to anyone. I think the males have more of a tendancy to be tempermental. But they are very smart dogs, very loyal, protecive, loving, and if you have a mole problem, they will take care of it. My jojo loves to dig and if there is a mole in my yard she will find it. They were origionally bred in Germany to hunt badgers.
