I have had dachshunds around me since I was a baby. The first one was very protective of me, and she was very much my best friend. Than when I was 15 years old I bought my dachshund that was very smart and could bark on cue to "How much is that doggie in the window".
I have been married for 10 years and have three dachshunds now. We have a 9 1/2 year old fixed male dachshund that is so in tuned to me, he knows when my migraines are hitting sometimes before I do, and he has also been the best around little kids. He loves to go for walks, to sit and be petted and loves to jump in the car and go visit my husbands 92 year old grandmother and show off for her.
Our 5 year old spayed female, picks up on a persons attitude, if you are sick she seems to sense it, and than tries to cuddle up to that person. She loves attention. And we have a 1 year old male. As the book "The Dachshund" by Ann Carey puts it, "He honestly believes (the dachshund) he is the principle player, and he acts accordingly. We don't own him, he owns us! He would prefer to act as dictator but will surrender power for a piece of cheese, a walk or a ride in the car.......He does nothing halfheartedly, and since he feels he owns you, he very much wants to be part of you and make your world his. The Dachshund is not a quiet addition to a home: she wants to be with you!"
And for me that is just fine. They keep me going and help to make life much more enjoyable.
