Consider rescuing an American Pit Bull Terrier. I did, and it's the best thing I did. We went to the pound to look for another dog, pit bulls weren't even on our radar. And we fell for a sad little 6 month old pup that we were forced to walk by. She has turned out to be amazing; easily trainable, friendly to EVERYONE, loyal, cuddly, charming, fun, even tempered, lovable . . . . I could go on.

Some things to know about pit bulls:

The DO have a lot of energy - you must walk them and play with them regularly. This is a dog that must be a part of your life. To put ANY dog on a short chain in a backyard is not only MEAN, but is asking for trouble.

They get a bad rap - they do not snap and kill their owners. The news media just loves hysteria. Since owning a pit bull, I have read many stories about this - usually finding with a little research that the dog was not actually a pit bull. The dog that chewed off the face of the woman in France was a LAB, people!

They CAN be aggressive to other dogs. If you want to keep your feisty Chihuahua with a pit bull, you might have a few fights on your hands. Dog aggression does happen, but it is NOT the same thing as HUMAN aggression. If a pit bull bites a dog, it doesn't mean it will bite a child.

They are better dogs to have with children. Not only are they fun to play with - my dog nearly has a neighborhood fan club - but they are LESS likely to bite than many other breeds. See www.atts.org for more information.

Why rescue?

DO NOT buy a dog from a backyard breeder. If you're buying, do some research on a reputable breeder and get a dog with great breed lines. A person who just breeds their two pets is not breeding to improve the quality of the dogs, they are breeding for $$. It's also a crapshoot as to the health and temperament of the dog. I recommend rescue because what you see REALLY IS what you get. The cute, happy, friendly, adult pit bull at the local Humane Society is what you are getting. The puppy you buy from a roadside stand (UG - see the parents at least) could come from parents or ancestors who have issues.

You are right on lots of exercise. My AmStaff had surgery about a week ago and is totally depressed that he can't go run around. He's moping around the house and making mommy feel very bad! I rescued my bully too!
