My 2001 Neon has 120,000 miles with only a brake job. It just keeps on running. It goes everywhere in the winter. I cross-country ski and often my Neon is the only car in the parking lot!
It has the original battery.
The gas mileage is great: 30+ miles to the gallon on the open road.
I can take my skis along just by folding down the back seats and using the trunk. It also holds my bicycle in the same manner. Take off the front wheel and in it goes! Sometimes I have both my bicycle and my golf clubs in the rear.
It does have a rough ride, but to me that is an okay trade-off for all the positives of the 2001 Neon. I've ridden in more expensive cars that don't ride a whole lot better.
For the price, I don't think you can beat a Neon.
