Mom and Me Cookbook

Have fun in the kitchen!

by Annabel Karmel, published by DK

We've invested in several cookbooks for our kids and we've been rewarded in kind with a great interest in cooking and helping out in the kitchen.  One of our very favorite kid's cookbooks has been the Disney The Magic Kitchen Cookbook but the Mom and Me Cookbook is also very worthy.  In fact, I think that the Mom and Me Cookbook by Annabel Karmel, author of First Meals, would be a great first cookbook for kids.  It is published by DK Publishing, a house that does a terrific job with non-fiction books for kids.

What I like about Mom and Me Cookbook:

The Table of Contents is so user-friendly.

A well organized, large print list has both the titles and page numbers as well as photos of the prepared dish.  So kids can quickly scan and find what they are looking for and even non-readers can use this cookbook.

Photos of all of the ingredients and each step of the recipe.

Each of the twenty two recipes is spread over two full pages with helpful photos of all of the ingredients and each step and each step is labeled with a large number for easy following.  Again, these features make the Mom and Me Cookbook a great first cookbook that is user-friendly even for non-readers.

Examples of the Recipes in Mom and Me Cookbook:

The Mom and Me Cookbook features kid-friendly favorites like pizza dough, sweet and sour chicken, crepes, avocado frog dip, freezer pops, chocolate fridge cake and a great variety of cookies.

It's important to note that half of these recipes are desserts, so when you're looking for a kid-friendly dessert this is a plus but if you're not, the desserts are really pulling.

My Viewpoint:  The Mom and Me Cookbook is so easy to use that it really does encourage kids to cook.  The wealth of photos makes it a  great for choice for young children, beginning cooks and even non-readers.

This sounds like a really nice book for introducing children to cooking. I have the book "Kids In the Kitchen". It doesn't have all the pictures but the times I have used it with my niece and nephews they seemed to thoroughly enjoy it.

Not yet sweetie! Check your library though because libraries love DK books.

Would this be one of the things your children have outgrown and you are now sending to me? (hopeful smiley face) sounds great!
