We have a teenage son with Down Syndrome and were quite nervous about taking him to Disneyworld. We picked the Contemporary Resort because of the location and the access to the Monorail. I researched this vacation to the point where I felt I could begin a new career as a travel agent. When speaking with the people at Disneyworld, I let them know we had a special needs child and at this point everyone became much more helpful. Our son has trouble walking great distances. I was told there are wheel chairs available at the parks, but they would have to be returned at the park gates. Not knowing how far he would have to walk to the transportation, I was given 5 local number where we could rent a wheelchair that would be delivered and picked up at the Contemporary. I was also given access to the hotel directly and spoke with an assistant manager. After explaining our situation, we were give one of the new renovated rooms! As a suggestion, I recommend you contact your doctor and get a letter explaining your child's disability and any problems they would encounter with crowds, the heat, ect. We were told to take our letter to the first park we went to (the parks customer service). We were given a special tag which allowed us to enter rides quicker than the rest of the crowds. We felt everyone from the operators, the hotel employees, the park employees, and the characters were there to give our son the best vacation ever! Take your time (we took 9 days to "do Disneyworld"), RESEARCH! That's the key and don't be afraid to discuss you child's disability - you will be rewarded with the huge smiles and nonstop laughter.
