When we moved into our newly built home some five years ago, traditional (is that what it is now?) cable was not available in our sub-development, so we had to choose an alternate route to televisionland.  Up to this point I had not heard a lot about satellite television, but what I had heard did not make me warm and fuzzy about trying it out, but I had little choice unless I wanted to put up and aerial.

My Viewpoint

So I took the plunge and choose Dish Network as our satellite television provider based mostly on their offer at the time, which gave us two satellite boxes, and one DVR (Digital Video Recorder).  The DVR was important because for the first time I would be able to record and playback programs on my schedule.  The programming choices are were in line with what we had been getting with cable, but the cost was about $15.00 less a month.  Basic programming was and is around $39.99 a month for 100 channels, but local channels, which includes PBS, costs an extra $5.00 a month and Dish us the lease the satellite receivers as well; that will be an extra $10.00 a month, thank you.

Of course over time the cost for the feed crept up as well and became untenable, so for about a year we went the Direct TV, but then eventually switched back the Dish Network because they made us a deal we couldn't refuse.  We could now have two feeds and record and playback on each one in two room simultaneously; how sweet is that.  So we came back, but by then out tastes had outgrown just basic programming; we now had to have HBO (movies, The Soprano's, The Wire, Big Love, and Rome) and Showtime (movies, The L Word, Huff, Dexter and The Tutors). But we were able to get the two premium packages for a cut rate price, so we went with it.

So now we are back at Dish Network (for 64.99 a month or thereabouts), which now offers digital, on-demand, and HD programming choices, and here we will stay despite Comcast's weekly mailings.  We are satisfied with the service overall, but inclement weather does sometime affect the signal for short periods of time.  If the outage is prolonged, Dish Network has always credited our account.

We are happy with the Dish...
