Trying to be a cool mom and get ahead of the game, I purchased a Spider-Man costume for my son several months before Halloween. The costume is distributed by Disguise (TM) and is available for sale on several websites. I made the early purchase because my son is a big fan of Spider-Man and the online sale that I found was a scoop-it-up-now deal.
When I received my package, I opened it up and noticed right away that there were a few loose threads hanging around the back of the neckline. Not wanting the hassle of returning the costume (hindsight is everything), I went ahead and clipped the extra threads and put the costume away.
I retrieved the costume in mid-September so that my son could wear it to an early Halloween event (yes, VERY early, I know). After putting it on, I noticed that there was a one-inch section of the costume that was not sewn along the seam line. Much to my chagrin, there was nothing that I could do at that point since my son needed to wear it right then.
I was also discouraged to see that the costume was sized smaller than marked on the packaging. I ordered a costume that would fit a sized 7-10 child and my son, size 5, could barely wear it. It was stretched out as far as it could go and to my son's disappointment, the included muscle chest piece would not fit inside the costume. What is Spider-Man without muscles?
My son, being the trooper that he is, took it in stride and proudly wore his Spider-Man costume for the festivities. He trick-or-treated, went on a wagon ride, played games, and ate lots of sugar-filled goodies all while in his Spider-Man glory. It wasn't until the party was over and Spider-Man was ready to retire for the night when I noticed how much wear and tear that costume took. Threads were coming out in several places and the one-inch un-sewn seam turned into several inches.
Long story short: I should have returned this costume upon receipt. The thin material did not hold up during the production process and definitely was not up to my son's Spider-Man stunts on that fun-filled day. My son enjoyed wearing the costume but it was not durable enough to wear again for future Halloween events. Also, the smaller size of the costume made it uncomfortable for my son to wear for a long period of time.
Since that fateful September day, the Spider-Man costume has been retired to the bottom of my son's closet and hasn't made a reappearance. I still ended up being the cool mom that I had hoped for because my son changed his mind and decided to be a Jedi for Halloween. This time, I carefully inspected the costume and had my son try it on right after I purchased it. Lesson learned.
