I use my Discover card for everything I possibly can. Okay, here's the kicker. I use my card for things that I would pay for anyway, and by using the card, I get cash or rewards back. So, if I already have the money I'd pay for, say, groceries or gas, I keep that cash to pay the bill when it comes, and use the card.
The absolutely, undeniably, most important part is to pay 100% of your bill when it's due. So, by paying for things with my Discover credit card that I would be paying for with cash from the bank, I'm able to get awards. Then when you pay the balance in full on a monthly basis, you also do not get charged any interest. And, my card has no annual fee, so it's a win win situation.
I use these rewards for gift cards that you pay for with your cash back award. And you can spend $20 of your cash back for a $25 gift card, saving you even more.
Just be absolutely, positively sure that you can pay for that purchase before you make it. Or the whole system will backfire on you.
