The Discover Card comes in several varieties. Consider the Open Road card. This pays 5% back in gas up to a maximum of $100 of gas purchases a month (I think it's $100 but double check). This is the highest that I've seen.
Other Discover Cards pay for some other categories and they rotate. That's very confusing and time consuming to monitor.
One drawback of the cashback scheme is that you have to reach $20 before you can redeem. Another drawback is the cashback amount is not that great. Another drawback is that not every merchant accepts the card. Another drawback is that it is primarily for domestic US use as most stores in other countries never even heard of the card.
So it's difficult to live only with the card but it's a good supplemental card.
Theft wise, they monitor gas purchases so if you try to buy gas 3 in the same day, they make sure that you are not a crook.
Overall, I recommend this with a few minor reservations.
