The Discover credit card was possibly the first credit card to offer cash back on purchases. But don't be deceived by promise of 1%, 2%, or even 5% back. Generally, your total charge must reach a certain amount before you begin to earn 1%; that is, for amounts lower than their scale, you only receive 0.25% and then 0.50%. Each version of the Discover card has their own rates and percentages scale, and usually with the 5% back, it only covers certain categories of items.
While this can be confusing, what upset me the most about Discover was their customer service regarding fraud or unsatisfactory purchases. When I bought something online (one payment with Discover and one payment with MasterCard) and had problems with the company, Discover would not help me. They wanted me to deal with the company itself (which I did unsuccessfully, and which is why I called Discover to intercede). MasterCard, however, refunded me, absorbing the loss, and proved to me they were pro-consumer not pro-business. That one event made me quit Discover and keep my MasterCard. If you have to deal with Discover customer service, good luck! Maybe you'll have a better experience than me.
