I was one of the first DIRECTV subscribers when it cost $499 for the dish plus programming costs. The box died just after the warranty so I switched to DISHTV. I came back to DIRECTTV when DISHTV's box died. Programming selection is good BUT I don't count available channels that sell products exclusively,. I also do not count the "God" channels or the promo channels for the service. Take those out and the selection is way down. I had an extended warranty on my TIVO DVR I had for a number of years through DIRECTV but when it came down to fixing it due to a defective hard drive - the company representative refused and blamed it as a TIVO problem. I then received a call from DISHTV offering all the channels I was receiving with DIRECTV PLUS ALL of the pay channels not just HBO and Showtime for the same price DIRECTV was charging for less programming. Thew new contract included HD channels, local access, Sirius music channels (XM on DIrecTV)which is better than XM, more music channels, more exclusive HD channels and a 12 month warranty. Only negative is DISHTV has less HD channels than DIRECTV at this time but will have them before the end of the year.

DIRECTV charged me for the warranty and REFUSED to remove it from my bill. They wanted to charge me for the HD "upgrade" and service. Not even a minute went by before receiving a phone call DEMANDING payment. DIRECTV - they don't want to let you go but if you do watch out
