I've not had any major problems with my DirecTV service or receivers. They work fine, though I did have to replace my first dual tuner with another one. The way it work is fine, however if you do a lot of DVR recording, it does act up frequently. It records things you didn't setup. Rarely ever has it not recorded what we did setup.

Picture quality is great. Our one choice town for cable service has very bad reception and fairly poor quality and high prices.

Living in a smaller town you do have fewer choices. We've been with Both Dish and now DirecTV. Both seem to offer more for the new customer and nothing to keep their current customers happy and content. At this rate, it might be worthwhile to switch every couple years between the two companies to get the best deals.
