Dig magazine is billed as being appropriate for ages 9 -14. My 8 year old daughter has already been enjoying it for a year. She's outgrown so many magazine favorites, I was happy to find another subscription that educates while it entertains. Dig is an archeology magazine that covers history and earth sciences.

Departments in Dig magazine:

Ask Dr. Dig: Dr. Dig in Dig magazine is actually archaeologist Joyce Tyldesley. She takes questions from kids like "Why do archaeologists profile units and features and why do they bisect features?" or "Was clothing related to status in ancient Greece?" Kids can send in questions by mail or e-mail.

Stones and Bones: The Stones and Bones department in Dig magazine is covered by Charles Baker who includes news, discoveries, history, facts, cultures, science, animals and myths. I like the way he connects history with popular current events and people as in the story of the discovery of Clonycavan Man who was over 2,000 years old and had a hair gel found to be vegetable oil mixed with resin. Baker wrote: "The discovery was significant because bog bodies are rare. Even rarer are those with gelled hair similar to the 21 st century British soccer hero David Beckham." I have a feeling lots of kids were drawn to read the story because of the photo of David Beckham and I think that's brilliant.

Games: There are generally two games featured in Dig magazine that are really challenging and fun like "Relative Mix Up" that requires kids to figure out who is related by following a process of elimination procedure.

Art-i-facts: Art-i-facts is a favorite department that focuses on what can be learned from one artifact such as a button or sculpture.

Awesome Art: Awesome Art is a showcase of art sent in to Dig magazine by readers.

Features in Dig magazine:

Each issue of Dig magazine has interesting features such as "On-Site with Indiana Jones," "Dinner with your Ancestors" or "A Day in the Life of an Archaeologists."

As a former classroom teacher and current homeschooling parent, I have appreciated that Dig magazine has great supplemental reading that overlaps with both history and science curriculum. The reading level is really for fourth grade and up. If your looking for a good science and history magazine for younger readers, you may want to check out National Geographic for Kids, which we also love.

My Viewpoint:

My students and my daughter have enjoyed reading Dig magazine and talking about what they've read. For that reason alone, I dig it!

This sounds like a good little mag. My kids are older but I have nieces and nephews in that age range. I will have to tell their moms about this one!
