with so much hype out with shows like the biggest loser....can a person lose weight w/o buying all the extra bars;  pills;  teas;  powders that are on the market?

Of course they can.  They just have to remember to eat less and/or exercise more.

YES! I lost 50+ inches by running each night. The more I ran, the less junk food I wanted to eat.

If you want a good place to start, try just writing down what you eat every day.

For example:

1 serving of chips
2 slices of wheat bread
3 slices of roast beed
etc.

It's a good way to see where you need to start AND a visual way to look at how much you eat (or overeat).

Also, try to just get moving. It doesn't matter what you do when you first start out as long as you move it - try swimming if your knees are bad or try walking.

I wouldn't put too much comparison into the Biggest Loser though - your goal is to lose 2-3 pounds per week, not the 5-15 pounds they lose weekly. It's not healthy to spend 6 hours in a gym. It's not realistic. The point is to make a LIFESTYLE change, not just a momentary fix.

Sure, all it takes is behavior modifcation and the will to change.  Of course its a fight to keep the weight off--beleive me I know--but that can be done as well.  The pills, bars, and fed diets are worthless, and a waste of money.

All those pills and fads are wastes of money, and some of them can be dangerous (remember Fen-Phen?), even if Bob and Jillian are hawking them all the time. Make smart choices of what you eat. It's a lot of label reading at first, and it's really tricky to go out to eat. And of course, exercise! There are lots of videos (my local movie store lets you have them for free for a few days), and if you join a gym, a couple of sessions with a personal trainer to get on the right track is not that expensive.

The Biggest Loser is a game show. This season 2 people ended up in the hospital, and another one collapsed and became non-responsive, and everyone is always getting stress fractures. Don't aspire to that. Exercising until you vomit and then doing some more is not healthy.
