I almost started jumping up and down and cheering when I saw this Diaparaps cloth diaper cover at the Salvation Army for $1. These typically sell for about $10-11, and I am always looking for a great bargain. I have been experimenting with making my own cloth diapers but have struggled to find a good waterproof material for a diaper cover that is economical and durable. I thought I had found the perfect product, but I was sorely disappointed.

UPDATE:

The president of Diaperaps contacted me below on this review and offered me two free samples of diaper covers that are more current because this version is rather old and outdated. The newer versions are much improved.

What I like about Diaperaps cloth diaper cover:

  • Fastens with hook and loop--no diaper pins and easier to remove than covers that you have to pull off
  • Hook and loop is softer than typical Velcro
  • Quality workmanship
  • Cute

What I don't like about Diaperaps cloth diaper cover:

  • Mine LEAKS, not only around the legs but also through the material on several different occasions. Mine says it is made of 100% cotton for the outer layer and polyethylene foam fill. It looks like this design may have been discontinued because I cannot find it on the website.
  • Mine shrunk in the dryer--I had been washing by hand and line drying, but we've had three days of rain and it takes forever for cloth diapers and covers to dry inside. Part of this was my fault--it said to dry on low heat and I had the setting on medium heat, but it is a real shame that a diaper cover cannot withstand more heat than that
  • These are quite pricey brand new and even the used ones tend to be pretty high

My Viewpoint:

This Diaperaps cloth diaper cover did not live up to the high expectations that I had for it because it leaked and then I shrunk it with one mistake of the dryer setting. It does appear to be durable, is convenient with the hook and loop type fastener, and a cute design; however, I am all about practical and am not impressed with a diaper cover that does not stop leaks.

Since I bought this diaper cover at the Salvation Army, I had no way of knowing exactly how old it was! I had tried to find the particular model on your website before writing the review, but I couldn't find anything exactly like it. I will be glad to touch base with you and I appreciate your feedback on this review.

Hi ! I came across your review recently. My name is Rachael and I am the inventor and founder of Diaperaps. The product that you are describing is over 20 years old !!! We introduced them in the early 1980's and they were the first diaper covers on the market, back when no one even knew what a diaper cover was. We have since made many changes ( as you can imagine ) . I would be happy to give you a free sample of our current diaper cover for you to try. Just contact us at orders@diaperaps.com or call 1-818-366-6292. Happy Diapering

None of the retailers around here actually carries the rubber pants. I could order some online but my daughter's legs are so skinny that I'm not sure they will fit correctly. I may end up going that route.

Have you considered using the rubber pants that go over cloth diapers? I remember when I used to babysit twins. Their mother used cloth diapers to save money and she had rubber pants galore.

In response to Meri's comment from Mar 30, 2009 at 12:27AM:

Sometimes I pick up great deals at thrift shops, but this one was a dud. I made a couple of waterproof covers from a rain poncho, but they are tending to tear where the velcro is. Don't worry--I don't give up easily, so I'll keep trying things until I'm happy with the results. Thanks for reading!

That's a bummer. I was hoping for good news!
[maybe that is why it was at the thrift store]
