I like the premise, and I like the character, but Lackey's forte is writing adventurous sci-fantasy types of books, which I have always enjoyed...I think that her mystery skills are a bit more sparse and that is why the third book in this trilogy is kind of weak and childish by comparison....I think that she is trying to do too many things with the characters, subplots, and is consequently losing the unifying thread.   I took the review advice and borrowed it from the library, and don't think I will be adding it to my library at home-even though I own a muriad of Lackey's work, and also her work... read full review »

Diana Tregarde Investigates by Mercedes Lackey [omnibus of Children of the Night (1990), Burning Water (1989) and Jinx High (1991)]


These days, it seems there are thousands of supernaturally gifted detective series in print, of varying quality. People must be reading these books, otherwise publishers wouldn't be buying and printing them. Series are mental comfort food; the characters return from book to book (most of them) and, like a TV series with a story arc (i.e., "ER" or "Battlestar Galactica"), there's character development within the books and the series overall.
