Where do I even begin?  Dexter is one of my all time favorite TV shows which leaves me wondering what that says about me!  Within the first few minutes of watching it I was hooked.

Dexter, a Showtime original series is a quirky, creative look into the mind of a serial killer.  But, the show comes with a twist.  The show is based on the novel "Darkly Dreaming Dexter" by Jeff Lindsay.  [Note to self, "Pick up book to read."]

Dexter is a TV crime drama written about a man named Dexter Morgan [played by Michael Hall].  In this series Dexter must lead a double life to hide who he really is.  Working in the Miami Police Department's Forensic Lab as a blood splatter analyst alongside the same people who would destroy him he develops a code of ethics [as it were] for being a serial killer.  Dexter will only hunt and kill other criminal serial killers who would not be brought to justice any other way.

Dexter discovered his true self when he was but a child.  His stepfather, played by James Remar teaches him how to act as though he has emotions like other people.  Dexter constantly struggles with this; evident in his attempts at regular relationships.  His thoughts are conveyed during the show giving you a peek into the mind of a calculating serial killer- the only difference is you feel yourself liking him.  As you begin to understand where he is coming from and how he tries so hard to become "normal" you start to feel sorry for him.  You actually root for him and hope he is not found out.

His step sister, Debra Morgan, played by Jennifer Carpenter is a tough, determined homicide cop who depends heavily on her brother for advice.  Dexter feels torn between his loyalty to her and his true self.

Sgt. James Doakes, played by Erik King, seems to have a sixth sense and suspects that Dexter may not be the man he pretends to be.  I find myself saying, "Danger, Dexter.  He knows."

Dexter's girlfriend, Rita [played by Julie Benz] has been left emotionally damaged by a bad relationship.  Dexter somehow feels protective towards her and her children.  As he deals with his feelings, she has an anchoring effect on Dexter that begins to unravel his self confidence.

In this second season, Dexter walks a thin line between being caught and staying safe from the very people he works with.  Filled with twists and turns you will find yourself waiting for the next episode.  Luckily, it is out on DVD and you can watch one after the other.

Yeah, I just finished the second season on DVD and am debating whether to get Showtime so I can see season 3 or wait for next summer and the DVD. Great job!

I wish I still got Showtime. This was a pretty good show. Did you ever see the show Six Feet Under on HBO? The guy that plays Dexter was on there & he played a real uptight homosexual. TOTALLY DIFFERENT than his Dexter role!
