Recently my wife and upgraded our cable television to Digital Service with HBO, Showtime, and Starz. I also realized that I have way too much time on my hands.  When I have down time, I have been watching Showtime on Demand.  One of the shows I got hooked on is an Original Showtime Series.  It is Dexter.

Dexter is the story of a Miami Blood-Spatter expert.   He works for the Miami Police Department. Just about everyone in the department loves him and confides in him. He is just one of the guys.  His girlfriend and her children adore him.  His sister is his only family that is left. She too works for the department, just as their late father did.  When Dexter is not hanging out with anyone he knows, he is busy stalking and killing people. That's right, Dexter is a Serial Killer.

Dexter is an adaptation of Jeff Lindsay's novel, Darkly Dreaming Dexter.  I have never read the novel so I can't compare the two. As far as the show goes, I like it.  I find it well written, most of the acting is good.  Michael C. Hall (Six Feet Under) portrays Dexter.  He is very convincing.  Just about all the other actors play their parts well, too.

There are some things that I do have a problem with. The writing jumps between very good and poor.  The reason I feel this way is parts seem very realistic and some parts seem very amateurish and far fetched. To elaborate more about the writing being amateurish:  There is way too much cursing: particularly, the "F" word.  This word, at times, is shoved down our throats. I am left with the feeling that the writers are using this word because they can.    The other thing I can't stand is Dexter's Sister Deborah.  Deborah is played by Jennifer Carpenter.  Deborah is the biggest offender of using this word.  The character is also very immature (so I feel).  Besides this I find no other problems with the show.

In all, I like Dexter.  The stories keep me coming back. I also find myself cheering on a Serial Killer. Hay, his victims are pedophiles and murderers.  Seriously, I find this interesting to watch and even though, there is some extreme blood and gore, It is not over the top.  Some people may find it disturbing but I have seen worse.  In the end I would recommend Dexter.

Thanks for reading

Brett

I have to tell you, as a former cop, their use of the "F" word is about what you'd expect to hear around a bunch of cops. And Debra, I like her. She is loud and brash, but inside she's afraid. Nice job!

I just saw Dexter for the first time this week. I'm reading the reviews to find out more about the show. Based on the one episode I saw, I completly agree with the review. I also was not impressed with the character Deborah. Maybe she'll turn out to be one of those characters that we love to hate, or she'll "grow" with the show.

Maybe Dexter will stalk and kill himself, since he too is a murderer. LOL!

The "f" word is not shocking. In entertainment there is a time and a place for it. I just think that the writers have gone overboard with it. In some scenes it seems to be used as every other word. Overkill.

I don't why entertainment types seem to think the "F" bomb is shocking. It's used so much now that it rings rather like "uhms" and "ers."

Nice review!

I've had a few people tell me about this show now, but I haven't seen it myself yet. I work in a bookstore part time and during holidays, and a buddy of mine said the television show is almost - almost! - as good as Lindsay's novel, which is a great compliment, since most film/TV adaptations fall short of their novel counterparts. This is definitely something I'll have to check out!! Thanks!

I'll tell ya - I don't think I can add another show to my DVR taping or should I say get hooked on another show. My daughter loves blood and gore. I'll have to ask her if she knows Dexter. Nice job. jo
