At its core, deviantART (Or dA for short) is an art community that focuses on improving one's artwork. But, the website is much more than that. You'll be making friends and interacting with people from all over the world.
This website may not be family friendly. dA supports all forms of artistic expression, including artistic nuidity and artistic gore. So, it's best not to have the younger members of your family browsing the website freely.

Deviantart is a website which makes it easy to showcase your artwork for friends and family to see, and comment on if they have an account themselves. It is also a good place to build a community, since it is so widely used by artists across the world. However, its system ranks artwork by popularity, and nothing else, which can lead to frustration when, let's say, a sketch of a cute bunny rabbit has accrewed more attention than your masterpiece oil painting. Ultimately, it is a very useful site and recommended to any artist, especially beginners.

Ok - I stumbled upon this site a while ago and got hooked - there is a real comunity and I have made friends all over the world, some of which I hav esince met in person.
Others I have written to, and I found many great photos, forums and other types of art.
What more can you ask???
