My 1 1/2 year old is very light skinned like me and gets diaper rash about once a week from something he ate coming out the other end. Each time I wash him, dry him, put on the cream and then reapply at each diaper change for about 24 hours and it's all gone! The worst is when he eats sand in the sand box because it's so gritty coming out... I've discovered if I put this on before the actual exit of the sand comes, we can prevent the diaper rash -- yay!
Note: The Desitin creamy doesn't smell, but the regular Desitin smells strong (even after they're dressed). Desitin creamy also wipes on and off very easily while the regular one is VERY sticky and hard to get off my hands after applying, and hard to get off at the next diaper change.
