Dermacia Breathable Foundation —

Quick View

Their infomercials drive me crazy but this foundation actually delivers on its promises. I was leery but, after using the product several times, I am quite impressed. It's expensive but, if you want your skin to look perfect, it may be worth the cost.

Full View

For full disclosure purposes, I received a Dermacia Foundation Kit free because of a mix up in the ordering process. The company had a mix up and charged me despite me not verifying my order and, after some back and forthing, gave me the kit free. They are a reputable company, the first step in deciding whether I want to use products from any particular company.

The Foundation

The infomercials are on constantly. Rachel Hunter shows how she glows as a long list of why we should try the foundation is reported. I was intrigued but not enough to spend the type of money they wanted for the kit. I did, however, check out the website and almost ordered, then backed out. They charged me anyway leading to me ending up with a free kit. I am glad I did try this.

This foundation is touted as being breathable. Instead of putting a mask on your face, it allows the skin to get the oxygen it needs to stay healthy. Made with Lycogel complex (I don't know what it is either!), it promises the following: It is transfer resistant. It won't rub off on clothes. It is water resistant for up to 90 minutes of swimming or working out, provides SPF 15, is non-comedogenic and hypoallergenic, and covers all kinds of problem skin with a natural, not cakey, look. Sounds pretty amazing, doesn't it? And pretty unbelievable.

I received the kit which had two shades of medium foundation in it to get the exact shade I need. I found that one bottle is exactly my skin color so the other one isn't needed. If you order a kit, you can opt for two of the same shades or two slightly different ones to blend and can change that with each shipment. The foundation comes in a pump bottle. Very little is all I need to cover my face. If I use too much, it looks a bit cakey. After I moisturize my face and prime it, I pump a very small amount and dot it on my face then blend. They provide brushes and sponges and I usually use a sponge to apply the foundation. The foundation immediately seems to bond with my face and doesn't sit on top. It gives my skin a nice glow and evens out any redness or blotchiness I may have. It isn't sticky or wet. It feels great. You do have to work fast because the foundation dries quickly and doesn't budge. Some have issues with that but I don't. I also don't have a lot of skin problems so I can easily sponge the foundation on and be done with it.

I have found that my makeup stays on all day or night and that my skin looks great when I wear Dermacia. There is no oil it it, it is water based with that Lycogel complex that doesn't clog my pores. I don't know if my skin is "breathing" through it but I have never broken out or had any issues with my skin after using Dermacia. It doesn't transfer and it is sweatproof. I have worked out with it on and it never budged, even when I wiped my brow. I have not swam while wearing the foundation but I believe it would hang in there unless I was fully emerged for a long time. A few splashes or whatever wouldn't cause any streaking or problems.

If you have less than perfect skin - redness, rosacea, scars, uneven skin tone, even moderate under eye circles - Dermacia works to give you better skin that doesn't look like it has any make up on it at all. I am not trying to be a walking commercial for the stuff, but I was really surprised at how well it did perform. Usually those late night infomercial products are all hype. This one isn't perfect but it's quite good and I really like it. The problem is, it is very expensive. I don't have any skin issues that really need concealing and I can wear almost any kind of foundation without a lot of problems so I am not sure I will sink the big bucks into this foundation when my bottle is gone. But I may. So little is needed and it lasts so long on the face, that the cost isn't really as high as it seems at first.

They have a kit that comes with several accessory products (cleanser, toner, spray moisture/setter, brushes, sponges, etc.) on auto-ship which is the only way to go if you want to use this. This formula is not yet available separately. There is a Dermacia Acne Control Foundation you can buy on some sites but it is not the one I am speaking of. This new one is for all skin types and is great for those with dry skin like I have.

My Viewpoint

I'm impressed. I like Dermacia Breathable Foundation much more than I could have anticipated and the customer service is excellent - which is a plus. If you have the cash, you may want to give the kit a try. It will last for months and you can return it if you choose. The site is http://www.dermacia.com. I give this product 5 stars. It does what it says. It's expensive but it may be worth it to those who want natural coverage with no breakouts and no obvious signs of heavy make up on their skin.

In response to janmyra57's comment from Mar 24, 2009 at 2:40PM:

Philosophy products were just f or the medical market too at first and now they're sold to everyone. I found a kit of Demacia foundation (2 shades), the cleanser, moisturizer, the moisture spray and a few other things for $33.00 complete on a website. That was a steal. Thanks for the info!

The 15 SPfF formula that bis sold e kit and is not the acne formula can be found at CVS for about $18.00. The other items in the kit are also available for $13 to $18,00, They are sold as simply "Dermacia". The new name for "Dermacia MD" is "Lycogel" and has an SPF of 30 and comes in acne and regular formulations. Lyco gel also makes a concealer. Lycogel is still pretty pricey and lists at around $62 for foundation and $35.00 for concealor. Lycogel is available in both the new and old ("Dermacia MD " packaging online at spa , medical, and professional sights as well as ebay. The bottles are dated so not to worry about old packaging. The informercial promotions did this product a diservice with their deceptive marketing. If you have normal skin the drugstore version with a lower spf and no acne med is a great value. You can always use a moisturizer with Spf first for more protection. The breathable moisture spray is fabulous at $13 it enhances any foundation especially the mineral powders.I reminds of when the only place to get Jane Iredale Minerals was at at the dermatologist a or plastic surgeon and women tried the more economic BE minerals . Both worked well for many and now , well have you seen the cosmetics aisle lately? 03/24/2009
