Delta Airlines is now my preferred carrier. Oh, I've liked them just fine for years (first time in First Class was on Delta, back in the days of the "Off We Go" jingle) but they've always been my second choice.

At the beginning of July, I had to take a last-minute trip to the Southeastern United States from Anchorage, Alaska to deal with a family emergency. Last-minute airfare is expensive and often means you're stuck in a middle seat. A generous friend offered me the miles to get there - and Delta had seats available - but only at the "cost" of a First Class award redemption for coach seats.

Because my traveling companion and I were flying Anchorage to Atlanta and back, ours was a multi-leg journey. At each gate, I spoke with the polite agents, explaining my circumstances and asking if there was any way they could honor my award redemption by actually putting me in First.

They did the best they could and reseated us on all but one flight. More importantly, the agents were sympathetic - unlike other airlines, where requests or complaints have been either ignored or dismissed. Given how kind the Flight Attendants were to us, I suspect the Gate Agents may have passed on information about why we were traveling.

The biggest "problem" with our flights was beyond Delta's control - a summer thunderstorm rolled into Atlanta, closing the airport. Because the incoming flights had to be re-routed, our flight to Seattle was delays five hours, causing us to miss our connection home. Delta protected First Class seats for us on an Alaska Airlines flight leaving 20 minutes after our (late) arrival into Seattle. The delayed flight out of Atlanta was also the only Coach leg of our journey, as well.

Overall, I was very impressed with how Delta handled both our requests for upgrades and the weather delays. The airline industry is changing, but Delta personnel remain the same.
