We flew Delta to Hawaii when we got married!
2 star rating

budget conscious, love to travel, Physical Handicap
Pros

flight attendants polite, pilots kept us informed, they give you meals

Cons
meal was typical airline food. BLAND!, Food could have used more seasonings, did not supply me with handicap needs, no leg room in coach, not enough time between flights

We flew Delta from Baltimore to Hawaii with a change in Minneapolis/St. Paul back in June of 2005. We drove from Kansas to Maryland to visit family before flying to Hawaii so my family could get to know my better half. We started from BWI just south of Baltimore, Md.

Delta and their service

Check in was a pretty smooth experience and us not knowing the ropes they helped us tag our bags and get checked in before we boarded. With me having a bad knee we were allowed to board in the first group of passengers. I even had a flight attendant offer to carry my laptop for me. We flew on a 737 both legs of our flight and I was a bit disappointed in the leg room I had. Being 6'2" I felt a bit cramped and did not have any room to stretch my legs to keep them from cramping up on me.

The flight attendant told me I could stretch my leg out into the isle if I needed to or walk around as well. My biggest complaint was once we landed in Minneapolis/St. Paul was that our connecting flight was all the way on the other side of that HUGE terminal. I tried to find one of those courtesy carts but there were none. We had 20 minutes to get all the way to the other side and with my bad knee it was one hell of an experience.

The only available courtesy carts were from other airlines and they would not honor a Delta customer. To me that SUCKS and Delta had all theirs in use at other gates. So my wife carried both laptops plus her carry on bag so I could make the long trip across the terminal. I did let them know when I booked the flights that I was handicapped but they seem to have forgotten that part.

Our return trip was much better as the gates were right next to each other and there was a 45 minute wait on the way back. Now does that make sense? It sure didn't to me and I let them know about it too. Going there we had 20 minutes to get to the opposite side of the airport terminal and on the return a 45 minute wait when the 2 were next to each other. My 8 year old Grandson could have planned it better than the so called experts at Delta!

The food was not too bad but it was bland and lacked enough seasonings. They did find some hot sauce for me and that helped but it was still Airline food. Drinks were plentiful and I had no problems there at all. I was allowed all the snacks I wanted so that helped me by keeping me chewing as that helped with my ears popping so much. (I can't chew gum)

Bottom Line

Delta needs to learn to pay more attention when a handicapped person books a flight. Just because I am not in a wheel chair doesn't mean I am not limited in what I can do. Having to carry a laptop and my carry on bag I was unable to use my cane so it was packed in my suitcase. They also need to allow more time when the arrival and departing gates are so far apart. They also could use a better chef to prepare meals but all the airlines I have ever flown have been the same.

All of them lack flavor, I suppose first class is better but I wasn't going to spend $750 more to just get a little better meal. Coach carries more passengers and they should treat everyone the same no matter where they sit. I mean come on how much extra would it cost them to use a bit of seasoning on all the food? Certainly not the $750 difference round trip cost. I was treated great on the plane, but not on the ground between flights. With everything considered I would have to give them only 2 stars because of their lack of consideration for my handicap!

In response to Glasb's comment from Mar 19, 2008 at 11:04AM:

I have traveled enough to know when I find things out of whack and I didn't find it very funny at all that my handicap was ignored when I made sure they knew of my limitations beforehand. You must be an expert since you seem to think you know more about my travel history than I do.

I have to a laugh outlout at your commentary. Clearly you don't travel much (or at all). Show the airline that can address ANY of the things you mentioned.

Thanks for pointing out things I would not have known! I liked delta but did have a few small issues with them (read my review :-D) Overall though, it wasn't horrible.

Thanks Laurie! They just need a bit more training for their people, it is a simple task to train them better. For some reason they seem to only do the minimum training....too bad as they used to be a lot better 10 years ago! Thanks for reading ;) Ron

Great review Ron. I would love to go to Hawaii. We used Delta when we went on our honeymoon too. I would give them 3 stars too. Spot on Ron!

Sorry I clicked on a con that was already there and didn't read it right. I took it off and added my own. It was bland like most other airline food I have had and could have used a lot more seasoning. Sorry for the goof and thanks for pointing it out ;) Ron

Did you mean the food was more inadequate, less adequate, or was that supposed to be a pro?
