I recently needed to replace a desktop computer that was about 8 years old.  I called Dell to ask about their new Vostro line of laptops as I routinely meet my clients at their home or office and it's nice for mobile computing.  I also travel frequently so it allows me to stay in touch on the road.

Dell advised that the Vostro line was created for the small business owner.  It comes complete with 4 USB ports, I believe a firewire connection, built in ethernet connect, wi-fi and was easily upgradeable to include added memory and a wireless N card.  In short, it allows for on-the-go computing and is easily useable at home as a full size keyboard and monitor can be easily connected without need for a docking station.  I do recommend attaching a wireless mouse to the unit as the thumb-pad, though functional for when on the go, is not something you'll want to use at home if you don't have to.  Though the thumb-pad technology has improved greatly over the last ten years or so.

This model is lightweight for a 15" screen, crystal clear and very easy to use.  The 17" model is substantially more heavy and probably not necessary unless you are performing a lot of visual presentations.  For most common word processing or spreadsheeting functions, the 15" screen is more than adequate.

The battery lasts about 3 hours on a full charge, of course depending on the type of use.  I recommend getting a spare batter just to be safe.  I've experienced no problems installing my semi-old multifunction HP PSC750 printer to this laptop.  The software install CD for the printer was not usable with the laptop, but the Vista op system recognized the printer and it works well.  In fact, I think the scanning feature of the multi-function printer works better than with it's own software.

For the small business professional on the go, this is a great unit.  It easily connects to a network either thru the built in ethernet port or can pick up a wireless connect through it's wi-fi card.  I chose the wireless N card, but a G model can be substituted.  You can also add a web-cam for video conferencing, though I chose not to add this feature.
