Dell Optiplex 380 Makes the Grade!
The ***Dell Optiplex 380 MT E7500*** desktop is a versatile machine aimed at the business user that provides a cost-effective solution for companies needing performance and upgradablity. It can be purchased from Dell through the "Small and Medium Business" and "Enterprise" divisions. Part of the larger Optiplex family of machines, the ***Optiplex 380 ***is designed to be quad-core and the model is available in: Mini Tower, Desktop or Small Form factor. I have used all three, but most recently set up a desktop model. You should be aware that this is a full size tower when planning for space. The Mini-Tower or Small Form Factor models are more appropriate if space is tight. Loaded with Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, and sporting 8GB of DDR-3 RAM, the ***Optiplex 380 ***moves through applications easily. Though it is not "silent", the fan noise is minimal once the machine has booted and during operation. With the Energy Saver mode engaged, (it is ENERGY STAR 5.0 standard and has an EPEAT Gold rating), these machines can be a great part of an overall move to conserve power. As this becomes more important for businesses, this option can be pre-configured. For those who do not have other recycling options, or want to "one stop shop", Dell offers machine recycle for a fee. (Personally, I like to do this locally). The OptiPlex tool-less chassis design is easy accessed when entry is needed, but can be secured if the environment requires it. For a business that doesn't require "performance grade" audio, there is an inexpensive desktop card that offers "just enough" sound for the web pages employees should see. Dell has configurable as well as "Fast Track" (pre-configured fast ship) options available and most come with 3-year hardware warranties standard. While the Optiplex line had some motherboard problems a few years ago, those were solved and this model seems very solid. Add a Dell E (economy) Series 22 or 24 inch monitor for an excellent desktop package. If your business prefers to run with Ubuntu Linux, setting up a dual boot with v 10.4 was easy (though I disabled sound on the Linux install preferring not to spend time configuring it as it is a known issue. I'll update this review if I choose to add sound capability at a later date.). If I had two complaints they would be: 1. Windows Operating System and Driver Disc media are no longer available to order in the Configurator (this is the online ordering system. I have not tried calling and asking an Account Manager to add these.). Dell utilities on the machine prompt the user to make these DVDs ... but some small businesses might fail to do this in a timely manner and regret that decision. 2. The last several I've ordered come with a pre-installed anti-malware software whether I want it or not (and the one they provide is **not** one I want). While I know how to uninstall these, one reason I go to the SMB machine line is to avoid "bundled software" I have to spend time removing. This is a solid business machine ... and one I use at home as well. Priced right, long-lived, Dell has a winner! Ease of Use Quiet, low heat, accessible USB ports and front audio / microphone (nice for headsets). DVD drive has been used a lot and still functions very well. Hardware Quality Especially happy with ongoing durability of a frequently-used DVD drive. Support & Service The top score is given for ease of finding driver updates on the Dell site. Have not needed other support. Durability The hardware 'just works'. Design I didn't buy this for its aesthetics, but it blends in well with surroundings. Ports are easily accessible and power / dvd buttons are easy to find (even in the dark). Performance The machine has performed so well I haven't had to think about it.
