laptop is very handy in most cases Dell made some design decisions on the Studio 14z that are head-scratchers, though. Take the port selection. The right side includes a 34mm ExpressCard slot, which turns out to be necessary when you realize that no memory-card reader is built in. Instead, you have to purchase a $20 eight-format card adapter that fits into this ExpressCard slot. (We guess members of this “online generation” take all of their photos and video with their phones, and just e-mail the content to themselves?) You also get two headphone jacks; again, we love the idea that you can watch a video with a friend, but this would make more sense if the jacks were on the front of the machine or, better yet, were arranged with one on each side. A microphone jack, a mini-FireWire port, a combo eSATA/USB port, and a USB port finish off the right edge. The combo port is powered, letting you charge a USB device off it even when the notebook is shut down.
