It keeps going!

I have had the Dell Inspiron 6000 computer for a long time and it still works. In fact, it is faster than the newer Dell laptop that I have. The space on this laptop is low, so I can't store anything new on it, but it still works. When it was new, it was unbelievable. It has a big screen, a little bit heavy, but functioned really well. I have to laugh at how much I payed for it compared to what laptops cost today. It still has the original battery. It crashed one time and we downloaded everything back on it and years later it still works. The screen crashed and I plugged it to another monitor and it just keeps working. The screen developed vertical lines that came and went for a while until it just covered the whole screen. The hardware though has remained intact. I have known laptops not to survive a couple of years and this one is going on seven years old and still surviving and at not too bad a level. You can't store any data on it, but for listening to music and surfing the internet, it still works great! If you come across one of these, its worth a try. It reminds me of the Energizer bunny! It just keeps going!

This laptop has been with me for 8 years. Some parts have come apart due to my little to almost no care. It's a Dell Inspiron 6000 with Intel Celeron @ 1.30 ~ 1.40 Ghz. The original system configuration was of 40 GB of HDD and 128~512MB of RAM. I upgraded the system to 120GB HDD and 2GB of RAM. It runs ok, and it's normal because of the years. An annual cleanup or probably an optional upgrade in the hardware is more than sufficient for those that just need a computer for basic tasks or want to test it for the next level. YOU CAN UPGRADE YOUR OLD SYSTEM FOR OPTIMAL PERFORMANCE. You can try installing 500GB of HDD and 2GB of RAM (probably can expand to 4 but not sure) Upgrade the motherboard (if upgradable) Download the list of drivers the computer needs to run and enjoy more years with your laptop. Recent software requires more RAM consumption and more processing power.*** Battery Life Bought it from a relative. The laptop was as is. The battery lasted for less than 1 hour. Support & Service Never had problems with this laptop. Speed/Performance Between poor and satisfactory. I couldn't ask for more back then in 2005. I upgraded this laptop and works fine to me. Design It was ok. Durability 8 years and still working.

Dell Inspiron has been a great investment

The Dell Inspiron 6000 has been a great laptop for our family.  We bought the laptop several years ago when we were still in college, and now my husband still uses it everyday for work.  In a day where computers are being replaced every three years, we have been thankful to have a computer that has endured six years of frequent use.  The only problem we have had with the laptop is having to replace the power cord after a couple years.  The battery died after a year and half and was two expensive to replace.  So the computer does have to be plugged in to use.  All of the programs preinstalled on the computer are still working and functioning well.  The computer is a little slow, but since my husband is self-employed it sufficiently meets our needs.  I don't know if this model is still available for purchase (new), but if it is I would highly recommend it.  We recently bought a newer laptop (different brand) and we have had more issues with it in one year then the six years of problems with the Dell.

Long Lasting, Reliable & Still Kicking 4 Years Later!

When it comes to laptop computers & am always sceptical & never make a fast decision. The Inspiron 6000 by Dell has definately been a worth while purchase & after a hard drive upgrade & a memory upgrade, this undying machine is still cranking out the bits & bytes. I bought this computer in about 2005 & have literally used & abused it so much that it should by all rights be dead. It has even had a USB device broke off in the port & immediately shut the power off, leaving it for the PC grave yard. It has been dropped, left on for days on end & used in a business for hours at a time. I've built web pages, captured video & played video games with it, not to mention watched Netflix movies with an external TV hooked to it. It also features some really usefull multimedia buttons on the front of it, that I have used with windows media play time & time again. I really don't see how you could find a better companion than the Inspiron 6000. Many laptop computers have motherboard problems among other issues, but this one has definately been a work horse & is still going strong & now running Windows Vista quite nicely.

Good solid computer, but heavy

I bought my Dell because of their reputation for customer service after having had a miserable experience with Apple support for my last computer.  The Dell worked great for two years, then in the third year, the screen began to have vertical lines.  Just one at first, but then more appeared.  I called Dell repair and they sent a technician to my house who fixed the display, and in addition, replaced the motherboard, heatsink, fan and graphics card.  All for no cost to me-- covered by the warranty. Some other good things about the Inspiron... I like the extra high resolution screen-- great for watching movies.  The comuter itself is very sturdy and well made.  My last computer developed cracks in the plastic from screws poking through the surface (maybe the screws were tightened too far?).  The Inspiron is much better, structurally. Things that could be improved-- the computer gets hot.  Also, mine seems to have a problem where the battery is not properly connected, cutting power suddenly.  The computer is also very heavy. Overall, I'm happy with the Inspiron.

The Inspiron 6000 is ok for internet access and word processing

I Dell Inspiron 6000 is an average laptop computer in my opinion.  The things that I don't like about the laptop is that the Wi-Fi is not the greatest in the world and when you have anything on like a microwave it tanks.  The hard drive is small and you can not put a lot on it and the the battery does not last that long once you remove the power cord. The things thats are nice about it is it is portable and compact you can take it with you when you go.  It will connect easliy to other wireless networks.  It has a card reader for an SD card and many USB ports.  In short the Dell Inspiron 6000 in my opinion is an entry level laptop with nothing special about it.  It would be good for mainly internet access and word processing.  When we bought the laptop is was the best and we have only had it for two years and now it is out dated and can not keep up with all the software and new operating systems out there.

The Dell Inspirion 6000 is a good laptop at a reasonable price.

I have had this laptop for quite a while now.  At the time I purchased it I did so because I thought I was getting a good deal and for the most part I believe I did.  I'm estimating that I have had this laptop for about 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 years.  Always working on my home network, I use the laptop a lot and now I find that the letters on the keyboard are actually coming off and one of the tops of the keys pops off all the time.  It makes a strange sound if I have to shut it down manually and always has done so.  The reason I didn't take it back to where I purchased it, is because I bought it online.  It came pretty well loaded but as with many electronics I find that a lot of what you ultimately pay for are not what you will actually use.  It's still ok and it has served me well.  With luck, it will continue to serve me for a couple more years, although I'm not sure what to expect because there have been little things that are annoying - that's other than the keyboard key tops coming off and the letters fading completely off. I'm on a network at home and the laptop and my PC are both Dells.  It seems to me that it gets sluggish.  I have an IT Specialist who I have retained for those times when I just can't do any more and the system is always clean and free of viruses.  It's also defragged when necessary and for the most part, I maintain it very well.  I just don't feel as though it's the best I could own. The reason I say that is because I have talked to people who own other brand laptops and they are much better systems.  Of course, here I am talking only about PC's. The battery pack is only good for about 3 hours and for the most part I use it when it's plugged in.  Once in a while the screen will "dim" and there's nothing I can do about that but so far it has always come back to its brighter visibility.  How long does that take; sometimes a couple of hours sometimes less. I still get the "grinding" sound if I manually shut down the system but so far it hasn't exploded!!!  I work many hours on this laptop and often I hook up a Wacom Tablet and it is very compatible and it works very well.  I loaded Photoshop onto it and it works very well.  Back to the keyboard, I do have to say that the "touch" of the keyboard is not bad at all.   It didn't take too long to get comfortable with it and it allows me to sprint along typing at pretty quick speeds.  The built-in speakers and sound system are really not that great.  It's ok but again, not primo. The laptop as a piece of equipment is a not bad either.  Mine is silver and it's fairly sleek.  Of course, now, with technology changing so quickly as it does, it's not the sleekest, but it's a nice little machine.  The corners of it are smooth and the screen is pretty nice.  I think this one is about 15 + inches but now that I am so used to working on a laptop (I'm no geek here) and I've learned so much and I do so much, I just feel that I need to move up a level and I believe that possibly a Toshiba or something may be how i will go.  It might be a bit larger in dimesions (Toshiba) but it seems to have a more seamless system.  Bottom line it's not a bad laptop at all and it has paid for itself however, I do believe that when that sad time comes when I have to replace it, I will probably go with something else.  It sounds silly but while it has truly been a small workhorse for me, I think it's time for a big workhorse in it's physicality and system. Again, I am happy with the Dell and I will use it 'till it's ready to go to laptop heaven.  At that time I'll go that other route but I have had this laptop for a few years and as I said before, I am on it a lot.  An uber lot.  There are times it's on for hours when I am doing graphics and I'm in Photoshop and the Wacum is hooked up - I think solid enough but I want more.  I would recommend this laptop on a scale from 1 - 10 as about a 6 1/2.  I want a 10!

Dell Inspirion is a good laptop, has pros and cons.

I have a Dell Inspirion 6000 laptop. I have had this computer for almost 5 years, I have had little problems with the laptop, but I feel that there are good and bad things about it. The laptop has lasted me a long time. It has little damage, just the usual wear and tear. I have Windows operating system on my laptop, and it works great. One thing about the computer that is not the best is the sound system. It is not very loud, and I had to attach speakers to get the volume I desired. I purchased the service plan with my laptop, which i highly recommend. I have used it several times, and I always had promt, high quality service. I installed a lot of programs on my computer, and it continues to run great. It does crash occasionally, especially as it has gotten older. However, most of the time it works great. Although my computer is older, I still use everything on it, and it runs like new. I hope it lasts while longer!

I have tried a lot of other personal computors but my dell is by far the best one yet. When i first bought it I had a free 3 year warrenty on it and all the help i needed, I can't complain my lap top has been good to me and my family. Great lap-top.

This computer is great for watching DVDs/videos on your laptop.

I was given this Dell Inspiron 6000 as a graduation gift in 2005.  I don't know much about the average lifespan of a laptop, but it has been fairly reliable overall.  I did have to replace the screen in 2008, being told that the reason for the problem was from the wear-and-tear that laptops undergo when moved around.  I didn't have any trouble finding an affordable, used part in that situation.  In 2009, my hard drive "crashed," and I replaced it with a new one.  Prior to that, my computer had begun running slow, due to the amount of information and programs that had been stored on it over the years, and I had a hard drive with larger memory installed.  Data from my old hard drive was not able to be recovered by the computer store, but most of it was recovered by a computer savvy friend of mine.  Other than those issues, I have not had trouble with the computer, despite several moves and a lot of international travelling.  I have found that the internal antenna picks up Wi-Fi signals very well, often in areas where my friends' computers cannot get a signal.  Also, due to moving and travelling a lot, I have relied on my computer for entertainment such as watching DVDs and videos.  The wide screen on this laptop is great for that, and often eliminates the need to scroll horizontally on web pages that are too wide to view on other laptops.  Dell has been great about customer service.  Within the first few years of owning the laptop, I called them about some glitches in the DVD player and they immediately shipped me a new part with easy instalation instructions, as well as a return envelop to mail back the faulty DVD reader.  As I use computers regularly but am not an expert in computer science, I have not needed any special knowledge to navigate my way around this system, and I plan to buy with Dell again for my next laptop.
