My Dell 4-in-one came with my new computer as part of a total package. I like the 4-in-one very much and would love to be able to use its features more freely. However, using it as a printer or copier is ridiculous because of the prohibitive cost of the printer cartridges -- you can't refill them, and generic substitutes won't work. There must be a chip or something in the cartridges so that if you remove one to try refilling or replacing it with anything other than an authentic Dell cartridge the unit refuses to function. BUT (and this is what disturbs me no end) buying those cartridges directly from Dell is overly expensive. Doesn't that mean that Dell has control over your buying? Isn't that illegal? Doesn't that at least hint at monopoly? I have resorted to doing all my printing on a little Lexmark that I purchased from Wal-Mart for practically peanuts, that allows me to refill its cartridges, and does that one job just fine. Of course, I have to keep switching the connecting cable back and forth between the two printers to use the scanner or fax on the 4-in-one, and copying is a complicated, time-wasting process at best. I will never buy another Dell.
