Del Monte partnered up with the Sesame Street Workshop, with the encouragement of Healthy Habits For Life, in 2006 to help parents give their children healthier eating habits. With characters, like Elmo on Green Beans, Grover on Sweet Peas and Cookie Monster on Corn canned vegetables, the hope is to get kids to eat their veggies. The cans come in packs of 4 for $3.49 a pack at most grocers.

The Sweet Peas Nutritional values are: 60 calories, 0 from fat for a 1/2 cup serving size, 3 1/2 servings per container, 0 cholesterol, 390mg of sodium (which might be considered a lot to some parents, but I'm just happy for the compromise of my son eating the veggies!), 4g of fiber, 6g of sugar, 3g of protein. There's 6% Vitamin A, 15% Vitamin c, 2% Calcium, 8% Iron. Most of the canned vegetables have similar nutritional values.

For years, getting my son to eat his veggies was a nightmare. Anytime I would give him a meal, he'd ask if there are "green crunchies" in it. If there was so much as one veggie, he'd refuse to eat the entire meal! I've tried solutions from "Peanut Butter filled Celery Boats," Veggies and Dip, getting him to help prepare the veggies, even the recipes from the "Deceptively Delicious" cookbook. All which work on some occasions, but not always.

So it was to my surprise when my son noticed Elmo on a can of Del Monte Green Beans and that was enough to sell him on trying them. It's so simple! Just a cartoon character on the can enticed my son to eat Sweet Peas and Green Beans! He thinks that the famous Sesame Street Characters grew the vegetables and who am I to shatter his belief, so long as it gets him to eat them!?!

What an ingenious, yet simple idea to encourage kids to love vegetables! And, for my child, at least, the Del Monte Canned Vegetables featuring Sesame Street Characters actually work!!! I'm SO pleased with the results!

I've been noticing that certain stores have clearanced these canned vegetables and they are showing up at Big Lots! Usually this means the company is cutting back or discontinuing this product. I had not seen any advertising on these Sesame character cans, so I assume the reason the cans aren't selling is because people aren't noticing them! I DON"T WANT THEM TO GO AWAY, BECAUSE THEY WORK IN MY SITUATION!!! If you have a finicky eater, keep a look out for Del Monte Canned Vegetables featuring Sesame Street Characters. If they work for your child, please go to the Del Monte, the Sesame Street Workshop and Healthy Habits for Life Websites and get them to continue the partnership for production of these character featured cans!!! Perhaps even encourage Del Monte to partner up with Nick Jr. & Disney for other kids' character preferences and even encourage other vegetable production companies to get in on the act, because we moms can use all of the help we can get! ;o)

WHAT A GREAT IDEA! I haven't seen these at all, but I know my kids would have liked them when they were young. That's a really good packaging idea. Great review.

That's a great idea, too! You're so creative! I could hardly believe such a simple solution works, but it does and, as a mom of a picky son, I'll try ANYTHING! ;oP

Save some the labels and recycle them! Believe it or not--I will not eat greens (mustards, collards, turnips or spinach); except for the spinach in the Popeye can. I don't know what it is about that product but that is the only way you can get me to eat spinach. My friends even keep a few cans in their pantry so that if I am at their house they will have something I will eat. I am oh so spoiled ;+) ~Gigi
