If you've never been to the Imax, your first thought may be "10$ for a 45 minute movie?" It's true, the price seems outrageous - but as far as Deep Sea 3D goes it was well worth it! Overall, I was glad I saw this, even though there were a few disappointments.

What is it?
The Imax is a huge screen and at the start of any movie you see there they demonstrate exactly how it works. It is bigger than any movie theater you'll usually go to and most comparable to a show you may see at Universal Studios (but just a little LESS high tech than that). The sound effects are amazing as well and they demonstrate how there are speakers all around you. Now just slip on those 3D glasses and suddenly you are IN the movie!

The 3D glasses are made of a hard plastic and not like those paper glasses they used to have when I was a kid. They make kid sizes and adult sizes that will fit comfortably even if you wear eye-glasses underneath. As soon as the Imax Experience starts, everything will be 3D - even the advertisements! So have your glasses on and ready to go as soon as the lights go out.

The Deep Sea
Now for this show! Deep Sea 3D was a visually amazing journey way below the sea. As you watch the action deep underwater, you see fish and creatures of all shapes and sizes as they swim right towards you! The 3D effect makes it feel like sharks and jellyfish are coming out of the screen and you can't help but lean back in your seat because it really appears like they are coming right at you. Visually, it's beautiful. Even the ugly things they showed were still beautiful. This is something you could never see on your own unless you were a deep sea diver. You get to go right up to the fish, see how they live, and what they eat. The whole movie is set against music written by Danny Elfman that makes it all seem so magical.

The film is narrated by Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet. Although they did ok, I thought it was a little dull and they could have been way more lively. They made a few lame jokes but mostly they were just reading from the script and handing out somewhat boring facts about what we were seeing. At other times they were silent as you just starred at the screen, wondering what was going on. For example, they would randomly just skip to another scene. You are starring at it wondering what you are supposed to be looking at. Finally, they talk and you realize there was a fish hidden over there and you didn't even know it - so you pretty much missed it because no one told you what to look at until it was almost gone.

At one point they made a note that this one type of jellyfish was often called "Sunny Side Up" because it looked like an egg. I was expecting a lot more interesting facts like this throughout and instead got very few tidbits. The film decided instead to focus on different creatures and what they eat - then zoom in for a few minutes while they eat... not necessary. Don't get me wrong, I thought it was interesting to see what the different animals in the underwater world eat, BUT did I really need to see one suck the guts out of another? It would have been enough if they showed one animal catch the other, but they didn't need to actually show the digestion happen. If they would have cut these parts down, they would have had way more time to show even more cool underwater animals.

I don't know how they picked the fish they focused on, but I felt they picked wrong. They showed a lot of interesting, and ugly, creatures - but where are the dolphins? and how bout some more info on sharks and whales? I guess I would have liked to see more on animals that I'm already somewhat familiar with and less on random ugly creatures that spend their lives on the ground. Like I said, it was still very interesting and visually you can't beat it, but I was just dying for some starfish! or lobster, or anything that I've actually heard of. Sharks were in it for a bit, and Jellyfish too, but most of the creatures were things I wasn't as interested in seeing.

I've never understood why these Imax shows are only 45 minutes. I could have sat there for another 45 minutes and still wanted more. It seemed like there were so many other creatures they could have shown us, and so much more they could have told us. At the very end Kate and Johnny told a stupid lesson about overfishing and losing sharks due to fishing and such. Well I know that's a good lesson, but I didn't come to this show to learn about that, I came to see what the undersea was like. It made the show end on low note and I didn't understand why they did that. It seemed they could have said that more throughout the film instead of just tossing it at the end.

This film is kind of scary for kids. Some young ones were crying (especially babies). The sound is loud and the visual effect is so realistic that you really shouldn't bring anyone under 5 and definitely no babies! As soon as the speakers turned on 2 babies in the audience went nuts! Be smart - don't bring your babies. Anyone older than that should enjoy this. I know it seems like I said a lot of bad stuff about it, but even so it is something you will never see anywhere else! At the very end they show divers videotaping a whale and they are basically face to face with it. This shows how dedicated they are to the study of the undersea creatures and how far they will go to bring us all these amazing images. My sister thought it was computer animated, but it really is the real undersea world! So imagine the "real" Finding Nemo. Your kids may learn some random lessons, but I wasn't there for lessons so I was more interested in watching. It's also great for people like me who never plan to scuba dive or go anywhere near deep water - although it did make it clear why I don't like deep water! There's so much stuff going on down there! If you are too scared to dive beneath the waves, then let someone else do it for you :)

If you need more convincing, visit the Imax website for a sample. Of course, it won't look nearly as good as it does when it's 3D! So visit http://www.imax.com/deepsea/, and find an Imax near you where you can go see this today :) Enjoy!!!!

That's awesome! I never thought about someone like that since the old style required 2 eyes (one red lense one blue, right?) It must have been even more awesome for her!

Thing about Star Wars II on IMAX is that it's about 30 minutes shorter than the regular theatrical version. I think Attack of the Clones runs for a bit over two hours, and it was explained to me that the IMAX film stock is so heavy, that Lucasfilm had to make a special edit. Scenes are either shortened or missing altogether, and the score suffers a bit, too.

One great thing about Imax 3-D: it doesn't rely on a person having sight in both eyes to work. I took my friend, who is blind in one eye, to see this in Vegas. She's never been able to view stereoscopic images, old-style 3-D movies, or even those Magic Eye posters. She was *amazed* by this film, because she was finally able to experience 3-D.

I'm sure it was a beautiful look at the ocean in a way you can't normally see (unless you snorkel, I suppose).

I saw Star Wars II at the Imax too, I remember it being very long though, don't remember it only being 90 minutes. That makes sense for why they might be short, but how come they can still show full length movies then? I've seen full length animated flicks in 3D there and some not in 3D that were over 90 mins. I wish they could do at least 60 minutes for these specials.

Well the ones eating each other are usually small animals that you can hardly tell what they are! I can't remember if there were any sharks eating or other big animals like that.

You gotta go! They show full length animated movies too - like Kung Fu Panda and Speedracer. Even though they are kids movies, they are awesome on the big screen!

This sounds interesting but seeing animals eat other animals (mammals?) always grosses me out. Still it sounds like an interesting experience!

I've been to IMAX movies twice. Once it was to see Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, which was okay but not without its "issues," then to see Disney's The Lion King, which was a happier experience. I loved the IMAX experience overall, and I'm glad the format works well with movies such as this. As to why the IMAX movies are so short...that's an easy one. The size of the film is huge, so it weighs more. That's why Episode II was so lame on IMAX. They can't show the whole movie, so they edit it to the maximum amount allowed by the IMAX format, which is less than 90 minutes.

I have wanted to go but the nearest IMAX to me is 200 miles away...;(
