I have just watched the final episode of this anime series. And I felt the need to write a review on it, on the off chance that someone could be looking for a good anime. The plot is one of the best and most entrancing plots to an anime I've ever seen. I've seen well over 100 different anime's and I'd have to rank this in the top 5.
The plot starts with a young high school student, Light Yagami, finding a notebook. This is no ordinary notebook though. When you write a person's name into the notebook, they will die in exactly 40 seconds, unless you specify differently. There are a few rules that apply to it, but you'll have to watch it to find out what they are. Once he realizes the potential of this notebook, he goes on a rampage, murdering every criminal and crime boss he can find. Light has a severe god-complex and wants to create a new world in which people may live safe, comfortable lives.
When I first heard of this anime, I was a little put off at the sound of a killer notebook. But as the episodes progress, it becomes so much more than simply writing a name in a notebook and having them die. It's truly a masterpiece. The only downfall is that its subtitled, which for me, really isn't a downfall. I watch many, many kung fu and anime movies, all of which are subbed, so I've become used it.
Since I live in the U.S. and this is currently, well has just finished airing in Japan, I had to find a way to view it. Thankfully I was able to find a Japanese TV station that simulcast over the internet. They aired the episodes, with subtitles, every Wednesday, sometimes Thursday, depending. I won't post the site here, but if you search google, I'm sure you can find links to point you in the right direction. I would expect a DVD release for Japan in the next 2-3 months.
Number of Episodes: 37
Rating(out of 10): 9.2
