DeLonghi Heater - Oil Heater - Radiator —
This upright, oil-filled heater has worked perfectly in our townhouse! Our townhouse was built with the air ducts arranged more for air conditioning than for heating -- 2x as many vents upstairs and all vents are on the ceiling. This left our ground floor living room, dining room and kitchen quite chilly in the winter, even with the heating on. We needed a space heater for this 500 sq ft. area.We first got a small ceramic, fan-assisted heater, and used it through 2006/2007 winter. The fan was loud and it left the air very, very dry.
This winter we decided to comparison shop and find a more suitable alternative. DiLonghi makes quite a few upright, oil-filled heaters. We settled on the TRD0715T because it seemed to be the top-of-the-range version of the choices.
First the advantages of this heater. It has a clever design, where the hot air rises out the top in a gentle air tunnel fashion. There is no fan, this is all in the engineering of the coils and fins. So far (1 month in use) the heater is completely silent. I'm most impressed that it heats our space very, very quickly. First thing in the morning, I only have to have the heater on for 15 minutes to take off the chill, and about an hour to get the room into the upper 60's. There are 3 heat settings (600, 900 and 1500 Watts.) After a week of using it on high, I tried it on low, and it still put out plenty of heat. It's a great way to save money! Oil-filled radiators are naturally quite heavy, so it's really handy to have the heater on wheels. We store tuck it in a corner when not in use, and wheel it out to where we are sitting when we use it. Finally, it doesn't appear to get burning hot on the surface, but it is quite warm. We don't have children or pets, so I can't comment on the safety.
Next the few disadvantages, which dropped my rating down to 4 stars. I was quite surprised that at this price-point the heater doesn't have a digital thermostat or timer. The thermostat is just a half-dial with no numbers. I tried turning the thermostat dial down low, but it still ran constantly, so I'm not sure what use it is. This doesn't bother me, because I just use the heater to get the room up to temperature, then I shut it off. The 24 hour programmable timer, although not digital, works great. It's a lot like the round outlet timers you can get for your Christmas tree, with individual switches in 15 minute increments. This means you can set it up to turn on and off as many times during the day as you like. Finally, perhaps the biggest disappointment was in the quality of the wheels. They work okay, but they are made of flimsy plastic, and don't roll well on our hard wood floors. At least one is always dragging, like a bum cart at the supermarket.
If you get this heater, one tip. When you pull it out of the box, all the wheels need to be popped out into position.
