My uncle died, so we needed a motel for two nights in the Edgewood, Maryland area and ended up at the Days Inn off I95 about 20 miles from the Baltimore Harbor area. Since it wasn't a vacation, we just needed a place to sleep and were busy with family stuff during the two days.
I wasn't expecting anything exceptional, and that's good.
The Days Inn is in a clump of about 5 motels and looked pretty much as good as any in that area, and the relatives said Days Inn had the best prices as far as they knew. It was a little under $70 per night but lower if you can book ahead online.
The room was basic with two double beds, small table with two chairs, nightstand, dresser, and TV. There was a very small powder area with a mini coffee pot and hair dryer.
The beds were comfortable and the pillows soft, so that was nice. The linens looked clean. Bonus points.
It was cold while we were there - in the 50s. The heater/AC unit in the window was off or wide open. First we were cold as the heat was off. In the middle of the night we were hot. I cut off the heat. So, in the morning, we were cold until full blast warmed up the room.
At 6 a.m. the rooster crowed - literally. I was thinking we sure got an odd motel and was pressing snooze on the clock on the stand and then trying to find the back buttons. Turns out my new step dad has a snazzy watch that crows on the alarm. Mom put that in the bathroom under a pillow the second night.
We all cleaned up the first very early morning and went to get breakfast in the lobby and also on the second morning - but not quite as early. They had cereal, bagels, and doughnuts. Some fresh fruit too. Bananas went fast both days.
The women working at the hotel had a conference of sorts the first morning. The younger girls all complained about various rooms by number - very loud. "Room 216 said the AC was broken, but it wasn't." Then there was, "106 said we didn't make up her bed, but well . . . there was stuff all over it." They didn't use names, but they might as well have.
After the "bash the guests" session, the manager greeted a few men. Very freindly woman I must say. One guy joined her around the corner in the desk area. "Honey, you need to stop and see me more often," purred the manager. She was equally friendly to all the working men who appeared to be regulars - not so much with out-of-towners.
The second morning, employees took up two of the five tables for breakfast and two of the three with a view of the TV. We got to hear way more about their personal lives than we needed or wanted to.
Back in the room, I noticed that the vacuum must have broken. The rooms open right to the outside, so it was obvious that the vacuum part had been skipped. Perhaps they do that between guests or something.
Now, the toilet paper holder, that must not have ever been cleaned. As the roll went down a bit, I could see that it would be very easy to write my name and address in the dirt. But, I didn't.
Likewise, I could have written my name in the mold on the bottom of the shower curtain. There was no fan in the bathroom. It made a good breeding ground for mold and mildew.
I'd try a different hotel next time, because I found the flirting with men in work trucks by the manager to be out of line and talking trash about other guests to be offputting, and I had to wonder about the cleanliness in light of the obvious dirt on the carpet and in the bathroom.
