Dan In Real Life Review Summary

In a "huge character shift for Steve Carell," Dan in Real Life has him turning into what some Viewpoints reviewers see as a "sad-sack low key romantic love story kind of guy" and not what they were expecting, knowing him from The Office. An advice columnist, Dan just can't seem to get his own life together romantically. However, other reviewers see Dan in Real Life to be Carell's best. His costar, Dane Cook, raised a few eyebrows as well, as most people only know him from comedy, and weren't ready to see him in a more dramatic role. While opinions are split on how enjoyable this film is, everyone is agreement that Dan in Real Life is more of a chick flick than how it's sold in the ads.

We like to think as parents that our main directive is to teach our children, but maybe sometimes if we allow it, our children can teach us a few things. That's the lesson I walked away with when leaving the theatre after seeing Dan In Real Life recently.

Dan's (Steve Carell) real life is suffering a...

Steve Carell turns himself into a sad-sack low key romantic love story kind of guy in DAN in Real Life.

He plays  advice columnist Dan Burns, a widowed father of three girls.   It's off to the yearly gathering of the family at the family's cabin/house on Rhode Island.  His teenager is rebellious...

In his career, Dan Burns has become respected as an advice columnist for an East Coast newspaper. He's also in line for a syndication deal to make him more widely known. In Dan In Real Life, Dan (Steve Carell) watches almost helplessly as his own family repeatedly disregards his advice. Sometimes, he's guilty of not setting a good example, even though his columns offer common sense solutions to personal dilemmas. The widowed Dan and his three daughters, Jane (Alison Pill), Cara (Tiffany Robertson), and Lilly (Marlene Lawston), are often at odds with their father over the things they want to do,...

I thought this was one of Steve Carell's best movies.  I loved him in Little Miss Sunshine and this was more along those lines than 40 year old virgin.  It was touching, almost to the point of tears is some cases.  Also very funny and the whole cast was great.  This is a movie I will be adding to my collection.

I just went and seen this movie a few days ago and I really enjoyed it.   Now it's not the best movie I seen before, but it was very good.  It had me laughing, awing, and I may of even shed a tear.  Well okay, that's because my fiance drank all the drink that he only wanted a sip of, what a sip!  I think, he should be in the Guinness book of records or something.  "Dude, get your own"

Okay, back to the movie.  One thing I was really impressed with was no one was cursing, no one was getting naked, and no one was having sex on screen, and it was still very funny.  ...

I only ended up seeing this movie because the friend who suggested we go was the one who insisted on this movie. Personally, I was gunning for American Gangster or Love in the Time of Cholera, but apparently, I was outvoted. All the while I was standing in line to purchase my ticket, I prayed that it would not be as ridiculous as the trailers made it out to be. I was unfortunately right. It was cute and very "feel-good" and definitely something you can take the kids too, but it was entirely too predictable for me. By the time the movie ended, I didn't feel like the film had shown me anything I... review »

Steve Carell is not my favorite actor. That being said I really liked him in the movie, DAN IN REAL LIFE.  The story centers on a widower with three daughters, ages 10-17, who writes a parenting column for a local paper. The bulk of the film takes place during a family reunion. Dan is sent to town to get the newspaper, he meets a woman he takes a liking to, but upon returning home, he finds out the woman is his brother's girlfriend. He then tries desperately not to fall in love with her all the while doing exactly the opposite of what he intends!!! This is a touching, funny, realistic film... review »

Ahh...Dan in Real Life. I love it! The quotes in this movie are just my kind of quirky..I laugh thinking about them. It will go down in my classic movies that I watch every couple of months. Along with The Princess Bride, You've Got Mail, Joe vs. the Volcano, Ever After, and While you were Sleeping.
At first you think this movie is going to be about a newspaper columnist, but it quickly switches gears and it's just about a guy. A poor, helpless, downtrodden, single dad...played by Steve Carell. He's perfect! I laughed throughout this movie...then I laughed harder when I saw it the second time only...

I don't even remember seeing previews for this one.  I probably just ignored them and went on with my life.  I am not a huge fan of Steve Carrell--  before this movie.  I don't watch The Office, I did not think that The 40 year old Virgin was the funniest thing ever.  I have always been a leave it person when it comes to Mr. Carrell.  This movie has changed my opinion of him.  I felt like this really showed honestly how people struggle- with the crazy, offbeat family members, with raising kids by yourself after a spouse is gone, with trying to find someone new in your life.  I felt like... review »

I had to drag my husband into the theater to see this movie.  I am NOT a movie watcher at all, however I am a huge 'Office' fan so I thought I'd check it out.  I thought the movie was rather cute at times, but I didn't like the big, fakey family scenes like, the crossword puzzle contest between the men and the women and the exercising in the front yard.  I'm not sure how many American families do these things at get-togethers...i know my family isn't one of them.  Steve was funny....as usual.  Dane Cook was hard to take serious because I can only see him as funny.....she was way out of his... review »

I loved this movie. I thought it was just the right amount of funny. I liked that my husband also enjoyed it and it doesn't always happen that we like the same movie.  I leave some movies feeling disappointed or pissed that the ending fell short from the rest of the movie and when I left this movie I was happy. I felt like it was good use of my time, which I don't have much of.  I thought Dane Cook did good in not the usual "Dane Cook" type of role. I'm glad he's branching out because I think he is great. I recommend this movie to all my friends.

This movie is slightly depressing. Steve Carell is a widower struggling to raise 3 girls. They all take a road trip to visit his large family, and that's where the movie takes off. He finally meets a woman he clicks with, but things get complicated. Dane Cook plays his brother in the first roll where I haven't found him obnoxious. "Dan in Real Life" has touching moments, some laughs, and it warms your heart at times. I liked it, but I didn't love it.

Dan in Real Life is the next GREAT in timeless Romantic Comedies.  An instant classic, with as much heart and beauty as Sleepless in Seattle, While Your Were Sleeping, and You've Got Mail.  I was moved to tears and insane laughter, all at once.  If you're looking for a genuinely sweet and completely enchanting love story, you have to watch Dan In Real Life.

I thought this movie was supposed to be funny. It was very boring. I also found it to be very depressing. I bought it before I rented it. I wish I would have rented it first. I would have never bought it if I had know how horrible it was going to be.

If you like comedies, do not buy this movie.
